After working in magazine publishing and book publishing, I finally made the transition over to the film and TV industry to follow my dream. The ten years I spent at Hallmark were insane and wonderful and a real-life education I could have never gained in school. Here is a list of job duties and skills I exercised while at Hallmark, but the real gifts here for me were the insights and perspectives on storytelling across media. I’m fascinated by how we can take one story and tell it in a print book, an audio book, a movie, and even on T-shirts and lunchboxes. I hope to continue to explore this process and practice in my next position, whether in radio, TV, film, or book publishing.★ Part of a producing team that delivered 24 MOW to air for CBS, ABC, & the Hallmark Channel✯ Sourced and developed 2 MOWs that aired on broadcast and cable.★ On-set producer liaison to regulate brand and story consistency and to problem solve.✯ Read and evaluate books and scripts for development; analyze data and forecast media trends★ Track publishing industry for forthcoming titles that might fit the brand✯ Research newspapers, magazines, and Web for possible concepts★ Write all of the Development Department’s pitch documents✯ Negotiate book options; process all payments for options and writer agreements★ Collaborate with team on writer’s notes and developing scripts to fit brand specifications✯ Assist at all stages of production including casting, releasing revised pages, editorial notes, etc.★ Track agent submissions, titles, and various projects✯ Remain cognizant of current media and pop culture trends★ File E&O insurance forms; work with exhibitor’s BS&P; work with professional guilds✯ Hire all office support staff including runners, PAs, and administrative assistants★ Maintain department databases and legal documentation
Associate Editor/Content Producer
The three years I spent working at Penguin (now Penguin Random House) were highly intense and educational, with my set of responsibilities increasing each year. The following list outlines most of my skills and responsibilities, but the real story of my time at Penguin is about learning to become a professional editor. I learned how to evaluate a story, specifically with regard to its artistic value, its market value, and its craftsmanship. I learned to shepherd a title all the way through the writing, publishing, and marketing process, with the end result being the “storytelling magic” that readers know and love.★ Edit and shepherd approximately 20 titles per year through the editorial process✯ Develop and produce companion classic literature video segments for academic market★ Evaluate manuscripts and present them at weekly editorial meeting✯ Develop content for commercial nonfiction books, kits, and multi-media titles★ Manage book budgets and overhead✯ Synchronize in-house publicity, marketing, sales and production process★ Work closely with Production and Management to bring product to launch✯ Write jacket copy, catalogue copy, and sell sheets★ Present titles at launches and conference
Editorial Assistant
Woman’s Day was my first foray into the publishing industry, and I learned all about publishing seasons, deadlines, and calendars, generating story ideas, and writing to inform and inspire. I assisted a senior editor with her feature articles and answered reader inquiries and complaints. One reason I thrived at Woman’s Day and had such a positive professional experience was because my specialty happens to be stories for the female, middle class, age 25-54 demographic. I love stories for the Everyday Jane, about our relationships and how we’re relating to each other. Even when I left this company to go work at Penguin in book publishing, I switched into the Romance genre, with the same target demographic.
Police Officer
I spent four years working to promote safe communities near my home town in Connecticut, shouldering quite a lot of responsibility for the department. In addition to working the beat (safety patrols, arrests, data processing, writing reports for the court, etc.) I was put in charge of publicity and communications. This included planning, organizing, and promoting our annual Open House. I made TV commercials that were aired on local broadcast television, was interviewed on the radio quite a lot, and I wrote a regular column called “Street Cop” for the local newspaper (1999).
