Profile bio

About Jetske Vaas

An engineer’s solution can be brilliant, but has no merit if it doesn’t match with the societal context it lands in. My passion is to make the two meet: a community’s interests and governmental dynamics on the one hand, and the craft and innovation of the engineer on the other. That way I am to contribute to resolving society’s biggest challenges: climate change and inequality.

Phd Research Environmental Governance

Utrecht En Omgeving, Nederland

Research programme “Exotic plant species in the Caribbean: foreign foes or alien allies?”Promotor: Prof. Dr. P.P.J. Driessen and M.J. WassenCo-promotors: Dr. F.S.J. van Laerhoven and Dr. M. Giezenwww.facebook.com/CoralitaGirlsSuccessful establishment of exotic plant species on the BES islands (Bonaire, St. Eustatius, Saba) has profound negative and positive ecological and social consequences. Through a Social Ecological Systems approach the knowledge will be generated that is needed to assess the feasibility, as well as ecological and socio-economic costs and benefits of future nature conservation and management scenarios. Inference of invasive species’ spread from single image in time will be linked to potential responses of stakeholders and governance institutes to hypothetical management scenarios. Integration of the two sub-projects will lead to the development of a Decision Support System that enables optimisation of social and ecological benefits through appropriate management of invasive plants.
