About James Farquharson
I am a HCPC registered paramedic who graduated with First-Class Honours in BSc Paramedic Science (Hons) from the University of Greenwich in 2022. I have extensive experience working in frontline ambulance services, but also in call handling for both 999 and 111. I am a driven problem solver, which while critical in paramedic practice, I have developed over many years through my love of target shooting. I am 4 time International and 5 time British Under 25 Sporter Rifle Champion and have taken 37 national and international medal places. My time in national and regional squads has developed my independence and leadership qualities, as well as allowing me to work on problem solving and technical skills. I have successfully carried these skills across into the world of medicine.

Newly Qualified Paramedic (Nqp2)
CurrentIn this role I form part of London's frontline response to 999 and 111 calls: either as part of a double crew ambulance, as a solo responder on a fast response vehicle, or on an urgent care response vehicle - either solo or with a nurse. I work alongside all grades of staff and have the opportunity to mentor student paramedics. I work within the standards of proficiency set by the Health and Care Professions Council, and in accordance with London Ambulance Service's policies and procedures, in order to assess and treat ill or injured patients in the community, then conveying them to hospital or referring them to alternate care pathways as appropriate.
Newly Qualified Paramedic (Nqp1)
During this period I completed the London Newly Qualified Paramedic Induction, and my blue light driving course. This was followed by 8 weeks of operational placement at St. Helier Station, working alongside another NQP1 under the supervision of an experienced band 6 paramedic mentor.I then moved to New Malden Station, working with paramedics of NQP2 or above, to develop my practice while I began completing my portfolio to allow me to move up to NQP2.
Bank Student Paramedic (Aap Scope)
While studying as a student paramedic I took up this role at the invitation of LAS to support the continued response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Under an AAP scope of practice I responded to 999 calls alongside either an EMT or paramedic as part of the core crew.
Student Paramedic
For 3 years I worked unpaid as a student paramedic with the London Ambulance Service, as an additional member of frontline ambulance crews under the supervision of experienced paramedics. I learned and progressed in my assessment and management of critically unwell patients, as well as minor injuries and illnesses.
111 Health Advisor
Following my work as a Covid-19 call handler at 999, I was offered the opportunity to move across to 111 with a condensed training course. During my year at 111 I became extremely familiar with telephone triage and also took a role in mentoring newer health advisors.
999 Covid-19 Call Handler
As part of the initial emergency response to the Covid-19 pandemic I worked with a group of student paramedics triaging 999 callers with Covid-19 symptoms in the LAS emergency Operations Centre. This was a dynamic role for which we only received a single days training and I took part in establishing procedures in consultation with management.
Shooting Instructor
I worked here teaching air rifle and air pistol to 11-18 year olds on a commercial basis, as well as instructing at “Have a Go” events for adults and children with a high turnover of complete novices.
