I have been a retired accountant since April 2023 living in Montgomery County Maryland. I seek ways to give back to the accounting profession by addressing the recent trend in the decrease in the number of students majoring in accounting and entering the profession. In that vein, I am looking for opportunities:• To teach an accounting class or speak to high schoolers to expose them to accounting for the purpose of motivating them to major in accounting and ultimately enter the profession. • To mentor college accounting students including providing support as they encounter challenges along the way and as they prepare for their job search. My accounting career spanned more than 40 years starting with nine years in public accounting predominantly in audit with the remainder of my career as an accountant in the Division of Corporation Finance (Corp Fin) at the US Securities and Exchange Commission. My primary day in and day out role as an accountant in Corp Fin involved analyzing public companies’ financial statements to identify and resolve instances of non-compliance with GAAP and SEC rules so as to correct or improve accounting and disclosures for investors. For 19 of my years in Corp Fin, I carried out this role as manager of a group ranging from 15 to 25 accountants with responsibility for companies in the insurance, pharmaceutical and biotech industries. My manager role provided me the opportunity to speak at pharmaceutical/biotech accounting conferences and to meet with a group of major insurance company representatives about current industry accounting and disclosure issues. During my last three and half years in Corp Fin, I along with four other managers created a new office in Corp Fin, the Office of Assessment and Improvement, that reported to Corp Fin leadership and focused on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of Corp Fin’s processes performed by its accountants and attorneys in correcting and improving disclosures for investors.I held a CPA license for almost my entire career until it expired on June 30, 2024.
