About Jessica Mclain
I'm a Michiana local and graduate of the Indiana University Maurer School of Law (IU Bloomington) with an undergraduate background in psychology, criminal justice, and political science. I am a member in good standing of the Indiana Bar since 2014.I was a Deputy Prosecutor for St. Joseph County (Special Victims Unit) and a grant-funded Protection Order Attorney for the Family Justice Center of St. Joseph County. I have tried over 60 cases in criminal court (mostly at the misdemeanor level, with a few felonies). While at the FJC, I had over 50 protective order hearings and drafted at least that many petitions. I am now a Local Office Attorney for the Indiana Department of Child Services, based in St. Joseph County but covering all of Region 3 (Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall, and St. Joseph). My internships, externships, and fellowships were mainly in public service (Office of the Inspector General for the Department of Homeland Security, Office of General Counsel for the Department of Commerce, judicial extern to a Federal Magistrate Judge in the Northern District of Indiana, District 10 Pro Bono Project, Sargent Shriver National Center for Poverty Law), but I also was a fellow for two different private law firms doing a variety of work from family law to bankruptcy, and I was a Kaplan Bar Representative. I briefly worked in higher education right after graduating law school. I worked at Indiana University - South Bend in Student Services and at the University of Notre Dame in the Office of General Counsel. While employed at both schools, I took advantage of their opportunities for free tuition and started working on my MBA and then my MPA. When I left the positions I had to stop attending, but I have taken several courses toward those degrees. Now that the State of Indiana is offering an educational incentive, I'd like to resume one of my Master's Degrees.
