After ten years as full-time VP, transitioned to an on-demand role as a Senior Consultant. Typical client projects included Records Retention Schedule (RRS) updates to reflect changes in regulatory requirements and business operations. Most projects involved interviews and data collection, to identify and clarify the types of records and information being retained by the organization. In many cases, these RRS update projects required legal and regulatory citations research, to identify and document recordkeeping requirements for review by in-house counsel or outside counsel as appropriate. Research scope covered potentially relevant US Federal and state statutes and regulations, and citations for non-US jurisdictions (e.g., Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, UK) where appropriate. Some projects included creation of linked database tables, and delivery of reports in PDF / Word / Excel formats. These reports facilitated management and legal counsel review of the key citations that might impact retention periods -- or privacy requirements -- for specific categories of records and information. Other projects involved analysis of unstructured data repositories, using file-folder analysis tools such as Tree Size Pro, and identification of content types and attributes as needed for implementation of Information Governance programs.

During that transition process, I worked with the HDD manufacturing and test departments to double the production rate for both product lines, delivering needed end-of-life inventory to Xerox for its ongoing production and support of existing system designs.

Joined this start-up manufacturer of medical imaging systems, initially serving as a manufacturing engineer for diagnostic ultrasound imaging sensors and systems. Was then asked to lead the Regulatory Compliance function. In that role, I monitored and communicated changes in regulatory requirements, hosted inspections by Federal and state regulators, and coordinated submissions to the FDA for pre-market approval of new devices for medical diagnosis using sensors based on ultrasound, x-rays, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). I also managed the Quality Assurance organization, including quality inspection of incoming materials, assembly quality control, and final QA test of completed imaging systems to ensure compliance with FDA requirements such as Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) regulations. Later, as a Product Marketing Manager, I created marketing materials, and conducted educational seminars for radiologists, surgeons and technicians regarding the physics and technology of ultrasound imaging and doppler blood-flow measurement. The company went public and was later acquired by Siemens Medical Imaging.

As a Senior Scientist (physicist), I was responsible for the design and development of sensors for measurement of physical properties of various materials, and for the integration of hardware and software components into large industrial process-control systems. Traveled to customer sites in North America, Europe and Australia to support installation and calibration of new sensor hardware and computer software. Also coordinated the production and shipment of custom hardware and software packages, as required for completion of specific customer orders. Spoke at industry conferences, and published papers on the design and application of sensor hardware and measurement software for industrial process control. In 1979, near the end of my tenure at Measurex, I returned to Santa Clara University to take evening classes in the Graduate School of Business. I completed the MBA, awarded with Distinction, in 1981.
