About Joe Wright
I'm a primary care doctor and addiction medicine doctor at Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP). I'm also a research affiliate at the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where I'm studying urban policy around homelessness and drug use and working on a project about the history of the "Mass/Cass" area in Boston. (My writing and research reflects my analysis and opinions only, is not sponsored by BHCHP, and does not represent the views of BHCHP.) I am also an elected town meeting member in Belmont, and the founder of a local housing advocacy group. I began my journey in health work responding to the AIDS crisis in San Francisco in the early 1990s. Starting in 2015, the second part of my career was shaped by responding to the overdose crisis in Boston. My medical work at BHCHP has included clinic, respite, shelter clinics, and street outreach settings; starting up programs in care for people leaving jail, and for people with stimulant disorders; and most of all, in serving as the medical director for our addiction treatment team, focused primarily on buprenorphine. I led the transformation and expansion of this team to a focus on rapid-access, low-barrier, highly flexible care. Work led by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, in collaboration with BHCHP, showed that same-month engagement with our team was associated with a two-thirds reduction in risk for death. I continue to provide primary care and specialty addiction care, but have stepped down from my leadership role to focus on research and writing.
