  John R. Chaney is a full Professor with tenure and former Criminal Justice Program Director at City University of New York's LaGuardia Community College. He serves as the Primary Investigator for the federally funded Accelerated College Transition project targeting incarcerated students. Formerly the Kings County District Attorney’s Office's Executive Director for ComALERT, the reentry program nationally recognized for its effectiveness in reducing recidivism, he also served as the NY state-appointed Coordinator for the Kings County Reentry Task Force. In this capacity he provided key assistance in the program’s expansion, and through the creation of productive partnerships with reentry providers, introduced a wide range of new on site wrap-around services and resources for men and women returning from incarceration. He is the co-author of Gifts From the Dark: Learning from the Incarceration Experience and co-editor and contributing author of "Race, Education and Reintegrating Formerly Incarcerated Citizens: Counterstories and Counterspaces", both published by Rowman & Littlefield.Professor Chaney has served as a consultant in the formation and management of numerous grassroots community organizations . He serves on the advisory board for Queensboro Correctional Facility and is also the Treasurer for Brooklyn Plaza Medical Center's board of directors. His work has been recognized by the New York State Senate and the New York City Council and has lectured worldwide.Professor Chaney holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University and a Juris Doctor degree with honors from Brooklyn Law School.
