About John Childs
John D. Childs has over 30 years of experience working in museums and archives. He earned his BA from Yale University and an MS in conservation specializing in furniture from the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation. Since completing his master's degree, John has worked at museums in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and the Boston area. From 1996 to 2006, John worked in private practice in Los Angeles, working for area institutions and private collectors. From 2006 to 2011, he was the lead conservator at Historic New England (HNE). From 2011 to 2014, John was the conservation project manager for the 9/11 Memorial Museum at Art Preservation Services. In 2014 he was named the first Head of Conservation Services at the 9/11 Museum. In June of 2016, John became Chief of Collection Services and the Ann C. Pingree Director of the Phillips Library at the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem, MA, overseeing the library, conservation, registration and collections management. In 2020 John became Director of Collections, with the addition of exhibition planning, exhibition design and historic house management to his portfolio of oversight responsibilities. Throughout his career, John has worked at a wide range of institutions with diverse collections, including historic interiors, objects and archives. Since 2006, at HNE, the 9/11 Museum, and now PEM, he has focused broadly on aligning collections care with access, and providing museum and library professionals with leadership in ensuring that collections have the maximum impact while maintaining physical integrity. He has also supervised successful collections moves and established collections storage facilities and conservation labs. John has written successful IMLS and NEH grant proposals, and administered multiple grant projects. He has also been an adjunct professor in the Columbia Historic Preservation Program and a lecturer in the NYU Conservation Program. He has presented papers at numerous conferences, and was also a contributor to the publication "French Art of the Eighteenth Century at the Huntington" (2008). In addition to his museum work, John has been a member of the Board of Managers of the Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research since 1995, and has served as chair since 2017.
