My background is somewhat non-traditional, as I am changing career paths and entering the tech field after already having gained substantial professional experience in academia as graduate student, researcher, and instructor. Though my career track is poised to radically change, I plan to stay active in research as a professional hobby. I believe that my unique experience, coming from the natural sciences, make me uniquely qualified for positions in a way that perhaps many of my peers with equivalent technical skills in this field are not. I have gained a great deal of professional experience, including skills in writing and communication through grant writing, manuscript preparation, review, and editing; presenting at conferences; and learning to effectively solve problems in situations where few helpful resources exist. I have gained leadership skills from overseeing student projects, teaching undergraduates, and mentoring other graduate students. The problem solving skills that I have gained through scientific research will be invaluable as I move forward in my computer science career.I started learning HTML, CSS, and Python independently until deciding to enroll the Oregon State University online post-baccalaureate program. Since then, I have completed 12 courses in the program and am currently enrolled in Cloud Application Development using the Google Cloud SDK which is allowing me to increase my knowledge of RESTful API design, API testing, and containerization. Additionally, I am supplementing my formal coursework with various Udemy and edX courses in topics such as iOS and native mobile development with Swift and React Native and browser automation with Selenium. My primary personal project has been my website (https://www.johnhash.me). I have used this website to gain experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Node.js, MySQL, and API design as well as some experience with the basic functionality of the ArcGIS JavaScript API, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS online for plotting species distributions from my research database (https://www.johnhash.me/species_pages.html).My goal is to find challenging and meaningful work where I can contribute to products that others find useful. I want to be employed at a company where I can work with the latest technologies and be involved in multiple aspects of the software development cycle, including design, testing, documentation, and translating user needs.
