Since joining Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in 1989, I have investigated natural-gas composition and its effect on combustion and performance; conducted performance and emissions testing of hydrogen-fueled engines in both Diesel and Otto-cycle combustion; conducted combustion studies on a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen, commonly known as Hythane, and studied emission reduction techniques in high-speed diesel engines. Additionally, I have completed development of various diesel engines to improve performance and emissions for a mixture of applications.I have also conducted research on medium speed engines. The research has focused on the effect of lube oil on fuel economy and emissions in medium-speed diesel engines; assisted with installation engineering of a high horsepower large engine facility; worked to develop a high-pressure late cycle natural-gas injected engine; assisted in the demonstration of a medium-speed engine to reduce NOx emissions by 75 percent; worked as a consultant to large-bore/medium-speed engine users in the industrial, marine, rail, and nuclear power plant settings to reduce emissions and determine causes of various engine failures.Most recently I have focused on performance and emissions related to medium speed engines used on locomotives and marine applications.
