Creative Destruction Lab is a unique Canadian startup accelerator focusing on seed-stage companies solving hard problems backed by science and machine learning / AI. The CDL provides focus, assessment, and guidance to its ventures from a large suite of entrepreneurs, scientists, and investors, and doesn't take any equity or payment in return. I do my best to advise startups during the sessions, and provide mentorship to some startups between the sessions.

I was PagerDuty's 1st employee; over the course of 7.5 years and many different roles, I helped grow and scale PagerDuty from 4 to 400 people and from $0M to $100MM in ARR.I started as a senior developer, moved into managing teams, then teams of teams, then all of engineering as an interim VPE. After helping find a permanent VPE I moved into our first architect-type role.In this final architect role, I was working on both tactical and strategic technical initiatives that had department-wide or company-wide impact.

Took over as VP of Engineering (of a department of 50-60 engineers) on an interim basis for 6 months while we searched for a permanent candidate. Some things I lead while I had the opportunity:- Introduced (and reorganized for) agile software development and cross-functional teams- Introduced goal-setting and tracking outcomes through OKRs- Established hiring and engineering growth plan- Helped our teams work through various autonomy, teamwork, and empathy issuesPagerDuty's agile transformation has been hugely successful, and has aided greatly in helping the organization scale while improving our customer focus.

PagerDuty's Realtime Engineering group is responsible for PagerDuty's entire incident & notification pipeline. With extreme focus on high-availability and reliability engineering, they make sure the alerts go out on time, every time.I built and grew this team from 1 person to ~20 people, hiring and developing amazing engineers of all experience levels as well as 3 engineering managers. I also helped interview for dozens of other roles across the department & company, including several executives. During this time I developed our first set of engineering levels, instituted many of PagerDuty's early engineering hiring practices, and helped calibrate our engineering hiring bar.

As PagerDuty's first employee, I've had to wear many different hats over the years. I've helped establish many of its early practices that still live on today, in one evolved form or another. Similarly, many of my early technical decisions have had profound impact over the years (for better or worse.)Much of my early technical work revolved around crafting the most reliable, available, durable, and consistent systems possible to make sure that we wake people up when their s*IT breaks.
