As Professor Emeritus, I continue to serve by advising on scientific evidence and health systems performance, while still supervising graduate students in thesis research and teaching via invited lectures on epidemiologic research and health systems. This service builds on past experience, responsibilities and impacts since my first academic appointment at U of T in 1989, which resulted in promotion to Full Professor in 2007.

As part of his research and service roles, Professor McLaughlin was Executive Director for the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow's Health (CanPath - https://canpath.ca/), which is Canada's largest health research program with more than 330,000 volunteers across the country.

As Senior Investigator, I lead interdisciplinary teams in epidemiological research that aims to advance knowledge and improve cancer prevention.

As Senior Visiting Scientist at IARC, I collaborate with international teams on epidemiological studies and worldwide cancer control, and aim to strengthen links with and impacts of Canadian programs.

VP responsible for advancing and applying knowledge related to cancer prevention: as VP for Population Studies & Surveillance (2008-10), and VP for Preventive Oncology (2005-08). Executive responsible for large provincial programs, their substantial growth and their successful operations. Upon completion of 5 year term as VP, transferred to serve as Senior Scientist, until departing in 2011 to return to research, teaching and other scholarly work. Accomplishments as VP include that I secured funding for, directed and launched cancer prevention and screening programs (e.g., including establishment of Canada's first population-based colorectal screening program), and major growth in Ontario’s capacity for prevention-oriented research (e.g., establishment of the Occupational Cancer Research Centre, the Population Studies Network, and the Ontario Health Study).

Executive responsible for establishing Canada's first large-scale, population-wide, prospective cohort study to serve as the foundation for advancing chronic disease prevention. Directing a large, interdisciplinary team, we established the Ontario Health Study. This included establishment of the OHS vision, strategic and operational plans, team-building and new partnerships, approvals at many levels, securing funding through numerous applications, national and international collaborations, multi-sectoral communications, implementation across Ontario, and demonstrated success through a comprehensive pilot study, all of which required extensive and effective scientific, excecutive and administrative leadership.

Established vision and strategic plan, obtained competitive funding for, built and then served as inaugural Director of Canada's first centre for molecular and genetic epidemiology - which continues in its scholarly productivity.

Recruited to bring expertise in molecular epidemiology, and succeeded in transforming a small group leading to the establishment of population studies as a new pillar so the Institute could extend its impact on human health. Succeeded in securing funding and recruiting which more than doubled the size and scope of the program.
