John J. Phillips is Managing Director, Associate General Counsel, and Head of Legal -- Real Estate at Barings, an international investment advisory firm with more than $346 billion of assets under management. He heads the legal team that provides support for approximately $44 billion in real estate debt and equity investments across the United States and Europe.Additionally, he supports the firm's Hotel Group and the company’s affiliates in Europe that invest in real estate products on behalf of institutional clients and firm-sponsored European investment funds.Previously, Mr. Phillips was Vice President and Associate General Counsel at two affiliated companies, Cornerstone Real Estate Advisers LLC and Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company. Prior to joining Cornerstone and MassMutual, Mr. Phillips was an attorney with Dechert LLP and Day Berry & Howard LLP (now Day Pitney LLP), focusing on real estate transactions and structured finance. He received a BA in journalism and political science from the University of Rhode Island, a JD from the University of Connecticut School of Law, and an MBA from Boston University. After graduating from law school, Mr. Phillips served as law clerk to the Hon. Robert I. Berdon, Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court. He has served as a guest speaker on real estate legal issues for numerous professional groups. He is licensed to practice law in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
