I provide consulting services to public and private organisations specialising in passenger transport planning and operations, transport information systems design and development including GIS and ITS, on a freelance basis or as a sub-contractor to other consulting firms. Recent examples include: an evaluation of passenger transport services for a local authority in Scotland; GIS mapping and spatial data analyses for a Transport Related Social Exclusion project for Transport for the North; producing an independent audit of the business case for the Cambourne to Cambridge busway for the Greater Cambridge Partnership; the performance specification and feasibility study for the Cardiff to Newport Bus Rapid Transit scheme; review of IT systems for the integration of ticketing systems for passenger transport for Bus Eireann, Ireland; and evaluation of brokerage models to match travel demands to supply networks, including software solutions, as part of a Total Transport project for Leicestershire County Council. My services range from technical analyses and modelling of transport systems to project management of transport studies. I offer a breadth of technical and managerial expertise in transport planning, the evaluation, design and the application of transport technology to the bus, rail and specialist passenger transport sectors and in the performance evaluation of transport systems. As an Associate Consultant I provide ad hoc support to TAS projects for local authorities and commercial bus companies. Examples include: review of booking and scheduling systems for Aberdeenshire PTU and The Highlands Council passenger transport services; review of technology options and software products for Telford and Wrekin PTU; review of IT systems for the integration of ticketing systems for passenger transport for Bus Eireann, Ireland; evaluation of ICT systems for the integration of community transport services in Northern Ireland; evaluation of SimBUS and strategic modelling of bus services in West Yorkshire; an evaluation of ICT technology deployed in the Bwcabus rural transport scheme in Wales; on-site support to the Transport Coordination Centre in Surrey County Council to lead the specification for a new booking and scheduling software system; project manager for the evaluation of adult social care transport and school transport services for Wokingham Borough Council; and a business analysis and systems analysis of ICT for the Integrated Transport Unit of Central Bedfordshire Council.

Part-time Technical Director in Transport Planning for the Consulting business. I provided technical analysis, support and leadership for transport projects. Examples include the performance specification and feasibility study for the Cardiff to Newport Bus Rapid Transit; independent audit of the business case for the Cambourne to Cambridge busway for the Greater Cambridge Partnership; options appraisal for the re-modelling of Rocket junction in Liverpool; strategic outline business case for the Carrington Relief Road Connectivity Scheme; business case preparation for transport infrastructure to support a successful bid to the government's Housing Infrastructure Fund for Gloucestershire County Council; and evaluating route options for the proposed Pan Northern Route across South Yorkshire.

This 9 month assignment was to manage the business unit while a permanent replacement was found. I managed a team of more than 20 rail operations analysts and software developers of the RAILSIM software suite for rail operations and simulation. RAILSIM is widely used in the USA and I was responsible for supervising the software development and testing of a major upgrade. This was beta tested in several key client sites in New York, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco. I directed a number of these tests and also managed projects that used RAILSIM to evaluate rail improvements in the Metropolitan Boston Transit Authority, New York MTA and San Francisco MTA. I was a member of the company's senior management team and conducted an evaluation of the Rail Operations & Analysis business that made recommendations for its future development and integration with the rest of the company.

Business sector director for practice that included software developers, IT analysts and GIS applications specialists. The practice provided consulting services as well as developing bespoke software applications for transport planning, modelling and management. These included the Accession programme for accessibility analysis and planning and PT Insight software for managing local authority passenger transport services. I managed a number of projects including the implementation of PT Insight in Hertfordshire County Council (called HAPS) and in Nottinghamshire County Council. Other significant projects I led were a review of public transport information systems for Suffolk County Council, the production of noise maps for Scotland (mapping noise generated by roads, railways, airports and industrial sites using GIS), an appraisal of ITS technology for the South East England Development Agency (using WebTAG methodology) and a noise and vortex administration system for BAA.

Manager of GIS and data management practice across all the company's offices in the USA. Project manager for several GIS applications development for state DOTs and metropolitan transport organisations including the development of a Highway Information System for Alaska DOT, Workzone Information System for Missouri DOT, Strategic Information System for Florida DOT, Roadnet Geodatabase for the Municipality of Anchorage, Integrated GIS and Transport Modelling Tools for Puget Sound Regional Council and a Transport Enterprise Asset Management System for Washington DC.

I joined the company in 1993 as Director of Transport Planning in the company's HQ in Boston. Appointed regional director of the company's western operations in 1994 overseeing three offices in California and Texas. Promoted to Vice-President in 1998 and then President in 2000. GIS/Trans pioneered the application of GIS to transportation and during my time there grew from a small start-up with a dozen staff in one office to more than 50 employees located in several offices across the USA. I managed and directed numerous GIS-T projects for the FHWA, State DOT's, MPO's and other organisations. I undertook research into GIS-T especially the integration of GIS and transport modelling software including network conflation of model and street centreline networks. My expertise was recognised by professional associations including an award from the American Planning Association for a GIS Transit System Analysis Model for the Orange County Transportation Authority, California. I was a regular presenter at transportation and GIS conferences. I also advised on GIS-T projects for India Railways, Sri Lanka Department of Transport, Hong Kong Department of Transport (Transport Information System), and the Inter-American Development Bank (using GIS to evaluate new transport corridors between Bolivia and Chile). I left in 2002 following the company being acquired by another IT company.

Acquired specialist skills in transport modelling (SATURN, Tranplan, Pedroute) and appraisal techniques and applied these on several projects for UK local authorities. London Underground and British Rail, and the Kuala Lumpur public transport reorganisation study.

Post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Transport Technology. Led research projects on IT in Community Transport, which developed the MultiTrip software programme, and an analysis of fuel consumption at traffic lights and roundabouts for the Transport Road Research Laboratory. Also lectured in classes for the BSc course on transport management and planning and MSc course in urban engineering.
