Most Sundays, John Witcher and I would go to the municipal course to play a walking 9-hole game, twice. The course wasn’t hard, mostly flat, straight, and had wide greens, and few hazards. Nevertheless, I often sliced or hit right into the rough on each side. Frustration was the order of the day usually, since this was supposed to be an easy course. No matter how well I played, he would always take me down a notch by beating my score or pulling off an impossible shot to win the hole. Little did I realize that he was teaching me my most valuable trait; of how to be patient and accept failure, then learn from them. After years of Sundays, I have come to realize that I mastered the course, I knew when to hit a slice to avoid the left rough, and where to putt, letting the gentle grade guide the ball. Mistakes told me where to not go, and a little quiet thinking, patience, let me analyze the situation. John taught me that not every shot was a failed attempt to reach the hole, but it was another way to learn what not to do. There were also times where he advised me to take advantage of the mistake. Sometimes, hitting it with a driver from the tee into the sand trap just beside the bunker is a way to get close to the hole without having to lay up with the five iron. Use the mistake to your advantage. Now, as a project manager, I’ve used that image of the ball half buried in the sand as a metaphor for some of the situations I’ve been in. Sometimes, losing an asset means gaining recognition that others are holding up their end of the project. Sometimes, the plan slices left when it should go straight. Sometimes, I get a birdie, and then can be less conservative on the next hole. In the management world, that metaphor may equate to where maybe I’m ahead of schedule and can afford to have the team quit early one day. The game of golf teaches us that no matter how perfect we think we are mistakes still have to be made. Even the best golfer in the world will have to score an 18 if he hits a hole-in-one every time. The best we can hope for is to do the best we can, and hope that we execute properly each time we swing. If we slice into the bunker, make the best of it. If we fade into the long grass, accept the situation then play back into the fairway and continue toward the hole. As long as we are moving forward to toward the hole, all is well. Mostly though, recognize the situation. John used to say, “A bad day of golf still beats a good day in the office.” Using John Witcher’s subtle teachings in my day-to-day affairs has given me a perspective that not everything is a disaster. Sometimes it can be a blessing in disguise if you play it right. No matter the situation, playing golf with John Witcher will always guide me though. Though he beat me almost every time, I still came out a winner."
