Provides strategy and management for NSN, a progressive foreign policy think tank and advocacy organization. NSN works to advance selective, pragmatic international engagement and a balanced strategy that emphasizes diplomatic and economic tools, along with a responsible use of military action, to ensure America’s security and promote American values. NSN influences the policy-making process by developing sophisticated policy analysis, using this analysis to advocate for our mission, and building an extensive network of Foreign Policy Experts to support our efforts.

Responsible for providing strategic vision and leadership for the Enough team. The Enough Project is helping to build a permanent constituency to prevent genocide and crimes against humanity.

Responsible for developing and implementing policy advocacy strategies on a wide range of human rights subjects including issues arising from the conflict in Darfur, U.S. health policies in Africa and elsewhere; and U.S. interrogation and detention practices; Directs organization’s relations with Congress and Executive Branch; Manages D.C. staff and office.

Project worked to strengthen the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) and to enhance the role of human rights officers within the Department. Worked with Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff to enhance oversight of State’s human rights work and to improve accountability of senior State officials for their records in promoting human rights. Responsible for all operational and financial aspects of the Project and in 2005 successfully established the Project as a new corporation.

While directing the Freedom Investment Project, simultaneously served as the Coordinator of the Human Rights Leadership Coalition (HRLC) an informal coalition of 12 major U.S.-based international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Human Rights First, and others. Responsible for guiding the groups toward consensus on goals for national campaigns, particularly on torture issues; organized and set agenda for numerous high-level meetings for the group with Administration officials, including the Secretary of State and National Security Advisor.

1998-1999; 2000-2003. Four years as a Senate foreign policy staffer, first to Senator Paul Wellstone (D-MN) and later to Senator Robert Torricelli (D-NJ). Responsible for the entire range of foreign policy issues from security to conflict resolution to human rights. Wrote speeches, hearing statements, policy memos, and op-eds on all foreign policy issues coming before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Coordinated with numerous ethnic and issue-oriented groups representing constituents. Drafted legislation on China’s nuclear proliferation, environmental policy in the Philippines, and corporate responsibility of U.S. businesses abroad.

Foreign Service Office for 14 years; served overseas in Venezuela, Brazil, and Burma and in Washington in the East Asia bureau and the Human Rights bureau. In Human Rights Bureau (DRL) was responsible for liaison with international human rights NGOs on a whole range of human rights issues. As political officer in Brazil, reported on national and regional politics and human rights issues. In Burma, served as primary reporting officer and liaison with NLD leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Served in the State Department Operations Center in 1991 during the first Gulf War and participated in the interagency process at the highest levels. In East Asia bureau, served as desk officer for Vietnam during the first steps toward normalization, and desk officer for the Philippines dealing with issues arising from the U.S. departure from our naval and air bases.

Worked on community health development projects on Rapu-Rapu Island, Philippines; designed and completed a public toilet project funded by USAID.
