Executive Director
Territory Executive (New England)
I am leading the ongoing integration of four ALS chapters into a single New England Territory and the resultant transformation of the combined workforce into four functional divisions - Care Services, Development, Volunteer Engagement, and Advocacy areas. Additionally, I am recruiting and hiring additions to our new Territory Management team, growing staff territory-wide from 12 to as many as 27, once the merger is completed in 2024. ALS patients and families under care will grow 140% territory-wide within the two years.
Executive Director
As Mass. E.D., I orchestrated the extension of our services, streamlined and modernized the chapter’s accounting practices and technology use, and expanded our donor base and fund raising initiatives. In the role, I headed a 12-person team who provided the Care Services to 450-500 ALS patients annually, as well as leading our Advocacy and Communications, Development, Administration, and Operations areas. Named a member of the National Office's Strategic Planning and Public Policy Committees, I also collaborated with the National Office on a new website, oversaw new labor and expense tracking system, upgrade of Chapter's laptop computers, and the introduction of Salesforce-based CRM for patient care, marketing and fund raising. Chapter was one of only eight of 39 chapters with staff-based Speech-Language Pathologist and Assistive Technology and Augmentative Communications programs. In addition, I oversaw acquisition of the non-profit ALS Foundation for Life, introduced the CEO Soak program, and weathered the COVID-19 pandemic with no chapter revenue events cancelled, no staff layoffs, and net positive revenue (we adapted our entire Care Services program to a virtual format in 2020, with in-person interaction returning in 2021).
Vice President, Policy And Advocacy
I oversaw legislative advocacy and policy formulation for a nationwide authorizer of charter public schools. My three-person team (and several third-party vendors) endeavored to influence state and federal perceptions and expectations regarding charter schools’ performance – academic, operational, and financial. As the chief advocate, I devised policy agendas regarding education reform and charter school authorizer’s quality, accountability, and structural standards. I collaborated with other members of NACSA senior leadership team, Directors, Advisory Board, committees, and stakeholders on strategic planning and resultant advocacy agenda. One result was introduction of the first internal Policy Advisory Group to implement the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) comprehensive federal education reform through federal regulatory channels.
Deputy Director, Division Of Advocacy And Health Policy
In my position with ACS, I guided legislative policy at the federal level, political affairs, and grassroots initiatives for largest organization of surgeons world-wide. I represented ACS’ more than 84K members in front of Congress, the Executive branch and its departments, other healthcare industry organizations, coalitions, and state physician associations. Directing a five-person team, outside lobbying firms, grassroots groups, and political vendors, we compiled national Health Policy agenda with positions on reforms to the healthcare system, physician workforce and payments, quality metrics development, and national repositories for health information technology (HIT) and clinical data. I reengineered and expanded our Grassroots Advocacy program to target all 435 Congressional districts and the 100 Senators with dedicated Surgeon/Advocate teams, secured the College as only national specialty physician organization to testify on Medicare physician payment schedule reform before three Congressional committees for the first time in a decade, and led a record-breaking, multi-tiered fundraising campaign for SurgeonsPAC during the 2012 election cycle.
