After graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point, I was commissioned as an officer in the Field Artillery. I served in various artillery units at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, and held positions including platoon leader, executive officer, and battery commander. This is the time where I first learned how to directly manage people. I was responsible for the management, training, and welfare of up to 120 people under my direct supervision. This included administrative matters such as: pay, promotions, awards, counseling, discipline, etc. Additionally, I was responsible for the maintenance and accountability of $11 million dollars worth of facilities and equipment under my supervision. I was also responsible for the planning, preparation, execution, and logistics for all the organization's operations.
