Due to inflation, here’s my three cents. Life is about falling left and right until you find your center. In 2008, I was 13 years old and stuck in an apartment in Beijing, China. Rather than spectate the Beijing Olympic games, my father forced me to ponder life’s infinite choices and determine before bedtime my future career. Doctor, lawyer, or perhaps a financial consultant like him? To appease everyone but myself, I chose law, to which my family cooed, “so stable, great pay.” But upon entering law school and completing my 1L, I finally knew what I wanted, and guess what? It wasn’t law. I wanted, no, yearned to create products that people loved; the issue at the time was the product I was creating. While I enjoyed speaking to clients and crafting substantiated arguments, my heart wasn’t in my work. I thrived in the creation process, but I wanted to apply my efforts to a product that I quantifiably knew would benefit all users. By chance, I came upon a video discussing Design Thinking. Intrigue led to obsession, and the UX rabbit hole plunged me to depths I could never fathom. I was hooked. I pivoted from law to UX design; I took a day job in finance to fund and complete a UX design cert at night. I spent weekends working on pro bono design projects, reading UX articles, and honing my UI and UX skills. Over a decade since that fateful summer in Beijing, I had finally found my center.
