When expanding minor morsels of available information into entertaining ten-page cover features, my time writing for Uncooked Media’s videogame magazine’s certainly tested my ability to create a lot of something from not much of anything. Then, as deadline’s twilight darkened further, I’d produce a news section, put together a community section, and write a couple of extra pages that had been standing awkwardly at the edge of the hall, waiting to be asked to dance. Prior to such regular monthly excitement I’d write reviews, previews and standing pages, and often travel across the UK, or to Europe or the USA, to represent the company and conduct interviews with leading members of the industry and learn about their forthcoming wares. I was also responsible for editing and uploading daily video content to the magazine’s YouTube channel as well as uploading daily news stories to its website, and communicating with the readership via social media.Working simultaneously in print and digital media, my work was available in all good newsagents and within a downloadable interactive application for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire and Windows devices.

Highbury Entertainment went into receivership, so I took the opportunity to work as a freelance writer and secured my own contacts and provided regular content to a variety of UK magazine publishers.I wrote books on a variety of subjects that were cover-mounted on PlayStation World, provided features and interviews for paranormal magazine Beyond, and regularly contributed to lads mags Ice and Front. My work also appeared in 360 Magazine, X360 Magazine, GamesTM, and Games Addict - a video game review section syndicated to local papers across the UK.

By planning feature articles months in advance I provided the publisher's advertising department the maximum amount of time to pitch content and so secure extra revenue. I also developed my own visual concepts and worked with illustrators to create unique artwork with which to give my copy extra visual impact. I'd write all of Play magazine's lead features, aim to cover unique topics, and always approached them from interesting angles. Then I'd work on the publication's core content, while using an authoritative and consistently entertaining voice. During this time I also regularly contributed to the publisher's film magazines DVD Review and Hotdog and had work published in its Macintosh and digital video publications.

Play TV was an ‘interactive television channel’ in the form of a DVD mounted on the cover of Play magazine every month. Covering all things PlayStation and costing an ultimately prohibitive £60,000 to manufacture, it included video documentaries and features that I produced and scripted as well as reviews of the month’s games as performed to camera by a selection of the publisher's magazine journalists. The channel also provided interviews with videogame developers that I conducted in the UK and abroad, and by liaising with the film industry I was also able to provide it with the latest movie trailers.

While in charge of Play magazine's reviews section I...Managed and commissioned a pool of external freelancers.Maintained an up-to-date schedule that enabled forward planning.Kept in regular contact with public relations departments.Organised and ran regular high value competitions.And all while also providing the magazine with many other pages of excellent content as I worked as part of a busy team in a highly creative office.
