As head of IT Architecture Advisory I was responsible for building an exceptional team of IT Architecture practitioners as part EY's Advisory service line. The practice is responsible for the Architecture and Design of many large and complex IT projects across clients in Financial Services, Power & Utilities and Government sectors.

As a member of HBR's research community I provide insight to help shape the content HBR develops to enrich understanding of the wider world of management and leadership.

In the aftermath of the devastating Cyber Attack on the HSE in May 2021, one of the key recommendations was that the HSE seek to “establish a transformational Chief Technology & Transformation Officer (“CTTO”) and office to create a vision and architecture for a resilient and future-fit technology capability; to lead the delivery of the significant transformation programme that is required, and to build the increased function that will be necessary to execute such a scale of IT change.” Recognising the urgency of driving this change, the HSE sought interim appointments from the market pending a permanent appointment. John took up this position reporting to CEO in June 2022 and fulfilled this role on an interim basis until June 2024.In his time as CTTO John led the establishment of a comprehensive, multi-year, multi-million-euro Cyber Transformation Program and also the development of the HSE’s Digital Health Strategic Implementation Roadmap (DHSIR) which sets out the vision, principles, and initiatives that are required to transform our health service digitally.Working with stakeholders across Health, Industry and the wider government John was instrumental for setting out the case of change and for increased investment in digital capability.His efforts have been key to strengthening the HSE’s Cyber Maturity, but also in setting out the plan for Digital Transformation to empower patients, support integrated care while also setting out how the HSE can deliver on its regulatory and EU requirements.

As Citi’s Chief Architect for TTS Technology for EMEA region I was responsible for working with global and regional Technology, Business, and Operations stakeholders in the role out of implementations in line with enterprise architecture standards, and practices. The EMEA regional role covered over 50 countries and all product lines within TTS - Receivables, Payments, Cards, Liquidity and Investments, Channel Services, Core Banking and Trade. As EMEA TTS Chief Architect I was responsible for ensuring all applications and product roadmaps align with best in class architectural standards and direction. As part of this role I worked with stakeholders across the globe on a daily basis with key locations being EMEA(Dublin, London), North America (New York), Asia(Singapore and India).

Chief Architect for Global Liquidity & Investment, Account Services, Mobile and Innovation portfolio’s for TTS Technology. Drove Architectural and Engineering strategy to turn around a number of technically challenging technology programs, resulting in key Liquidity Management platforms being utilised in 40+ countries winning industry recognition.

Head of Software Architecture Group for the Service Engineering (SE) group in Oracle’s European Development Centre (EDC). SE EDC is responsible for defining the infrastructure and technology enabler’s for the OnDemand and ‘Software as a Service’ business channels.

Architect on a number of high profile e-Government projects.Reach Public Services Broker Responsibilites started at tender phase. I was responsible for defining the winning technical solution. My responsibilities during delivery included ownership of the architecture, design, and implementation of the SOA platform. The platform is a key enabler of online e-Government service fulfilment.Automated Passport System The Automated Passport System was a project for the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland. The goal of the project was to modernise both the business process, and the resulting passport booklet delivered and used by Irish Citizens. My responsibilities were to architect, design, develop as well as lead the first phase of this project. Other responsibilities included liaising with our partners to define standards for interoperability.

Irish startup up building tools for requirements capture. I worked on new product line items for the suite an integration solution with Rational Rose.

Designed, developed and build a number of online solutions for leading Irish finanancial institutions on behalf of KPMG Consulting including the first online mortgage solution in Ireland.
