Development of screw compressor selection software for the oil-free, natural gas and industrial refrigeration markets.

One-man project team working on a shock and vibration recording device. The hardware and embedded software were in post-prototype condition when I took over the project. The analysis software was still in development and needed considerable re-factoring and debugging. It was developed in Borland C++ Builder and included both real time and retrospective analysis of 6 channels of streaming data recording the pitch, roll and yaw and acceleration in three planes.I also wrote the text for a sales website, promotional material and drafted sales and rental contracts prior to spending three days at a trade show at the NEC in Birmingham.

I managed a small team ( 1- 3 others) maintaining and extending the useful life of a Borland C++ application to record and store diagnostic cardiology and blood pressure data. It was a multi-threaded application with back-end database options of Paradox, MySQL and Oracle. The code had originally been written in German. Whilst the function names had been translated the comments in the code remained in German when I joined the company.The application displayed and analysed up to 12 channels of data acquired in real time from a range of exercise bikes, treadmills and blood pressure recording hardware. The code I inherited was poorly written, riddled with bugs and unsupported. The final phase of the project involved integrating this application into a new software suite written in C#. This was successfully achieved by implementing the facade design pattern to link the old and new code.

A short contract position with this world leader in the DOORS requirements gathering software. I worked on the development of the next generation product written in C# .NET. As one of a team of six engineers, I was involved in the design, coding and structured testing (using NUnit) of a small package of work primarily on the user interface but also communicating with the back-end.

As a member of a small development team, I worked on three projects, all written in C# .NET for Windows PC.The first was design and development of an application to create multi-room hi-fi sound systems. It involved XML and XSLT for data storage and reporting. My role was mainly on the user interface development.The second project was a wireless controller for the multi-room hi-fi. Again, my main focus was on the user interface.My final project was a network analyser. It's function was to identify and decode messages on a network and display the message content on a PC.

A six-month contract to work on a Bluetooth project to enable wireless printing to be initiated from a mobile device. The project involved wireless communication between two PCs, one PC acting as a source and the other as the receiver, where my application effectively simulated a printer. A 3-channel communications link was set up using frequency hopping radio and the data encoded in XML using the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) to transmit to the OBEX layer of the protocol stack.The application was originally written in Borland C++ Builder and I continued to develop in that language until all the required functionality had been coded. I then translated the code to Microsoft Visual C++ to enable HP's own engineers to continue working on the project.This was in the relatively early days of Bluetooth and I was reporting directly to John Waters, the chairman of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group, a committee of ten representing all the major printer manufacturers and Motorola..

A contract role to work on the Continuous Link Settlement Bank project. This was the entire software of a foreign exchange bank to be based in New York. It was a huge project running over several years. My role was primarily bug fixing as I was there a few months before an interim code release. I was coding in Visual C++ v6 and MFC.

I designed and coded a 'Pick & Pack' program for the sales order processing team. The application enabled warehouse staff to drag and drop icons on the screen and used barcode labels to identify part numbers. The requirement was to make it simple, quick and easy to use. The application was written in Visual C++ & MFC and interfaced to a materials and production inventory system.

Development of PC based test tools for mobile phones. The code was written in Borland C++ Builder and employed multi-threading. During my time at NEC, I worked on improving the quality of the legacy code, adding comments in the source code and documenting as much as possible.

Initially hired to manage the administration of contractors working in the R & D department, I was able to transfer into a development role and learn to program in Visual C++. The opportunity arose when a senior management decision was made to cut costs in R & D by replacing contract staff with permanent employees. I bought a PC and a learning edition of Visual C++ and studied at home whilst also receiving on-the-job training, mentoring and external courses. This was my first exposure to commercial software and a big step forward from the limited Fortran and Assembler language programming I had done during my studies.
