Head of the software engineering team (8 developers), Cloud and Firmware, building the world's best polymer 3D printer. Acquired by Stratasys for $100m.Origin's thesis was to build 3D printers for industrial mass manufacturing, rather than rapid-prototyping. In this we succeeded: Today, Origin printers are used in production environments at multiple manufacturers.I ran the software team, taking over from the CTO, responsible for the Cloud-based IoT functionality, Web app, internal admin tools web app, the UI on board the printer, and the printer firmware. When I started, there were some services which developers were afraid to deploy and yet were out of date, the codebase had been branched for a major project and both branches diverged by hundreds of commits over months of work. Two major projects were approaching tight deadlines. I merged and reconciled the branches, deployed all services, and instituted a regular testing and deploy cadence. Both projects met their deadlines.I worked closely with the other department heads, hardware engineering, customer success, product management and sales. I'm very proud of a moment where the sales team had to rank the priority level of work they wanted done, and I had explained the importance of a major database migration project so well that they unanimously voted to rank this tech-debt issue as the #1 priority. I also managed a few critical hardware-related projects.I championed internal tools to help operations and customer success, making functionality self-serve within the organization, rather than requiring developer time.I built an amazing team, hired six more developers, and they all stayed through covid and an acquisition. Only one quit before me.

I was brought on to inherit an almost completely unknown codebase built by offshore contractors. The system was falling apart, unmaintainable, and had weekly outages. Nobody at the company knew the entire scope of the product functionality.Initially working as one of three backend developers, over the course of two and a half years I worked on the web backend codebase, infrastructure, testing, and other miscellaneous services. I did deploys, devops work, and SRE work, keeping overloaded systems running in peak hours. I onboarded new developers until I became manager of the team and hired an additional six (and had to lay off two). For a year I managed the team remote from Toronto. This was a chaotic startup experience with everything you'd expect: constantly on call, rapid growth, an emerging industry plagued by regulatory changes, the chance for growth and elastic roles for doing anything that needed doing. In the end, I left an engineering team that started with five IC's, two contractors and a manager, to a team of over 20 IC's, with six Product Managers, four engineering managers, Agile enforced by Jira, a QA team with automated tests running on every build. In the meantime, the company grew larger every month and the application doubled the number of customers it served several times.
