My early career focussed on operational leadership and risk management in highly complex, ambiguous and sometimes dangerous environments. I flew helicopters as a copilot on search and rescue missions, before qualifying as a single-pilot and multi-crew aircraft captain and mission commander, flying surveillance operations deployed overseas. After a period of study at the Joint Services Command Staff College, I helped reshape the Navy’s approach to attracting and selecting the next generation of aviators, before finishing my career teaching trainee military pilots the broad range of knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to fly aircraft in combat.

As an Air Traffic Controller I upheld the highest standards of safety and reliability, making rapid decisions in a dynamic, complex and highly regulated environment. As a deputy Flight Commander, I was responsible for the welfare, career development and professional effectiveness of other team members.
