I am the metallographer for the Schenectady lab. Whenever I tell someone what I do for a living, they can only hazard a guess that it involves metal. I section samples, often with a diamond saw, mount them in a two part epoxy and polish the samples to a mirror finish; generally my final abrasive is 1µ diamonds or smaller! Once the sample is polished, I’ll hand it off to one of our metallurgists who will look for cracks in the material, corrosion or any irregularity. Afterwards, I apply an etchant to reveal its grain structure. The grain structure tells us quite a bit about the material, just like if you were to look at the annual growth rings of a tree. I mostly work with metals; anything from titanium, steels, coppers, aluminum, etc. but also have had the pleasure of working with a variety of ceramics, coatings, concrete and polymers.
