Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Stewart Lab (Newcastle University), using human intestinal organoids to research host-microbiome-diet interactions underpinning necrotising enterocolitis, an inflammation mediated bowel disease in preterm infants. Prior to this, I did my PhD in the Errington Lab, focused on host-pathogen interactions within the neglected tropical disease actinomycetoma. My undergraduate studies consisted of an integrated Masters in Biochemistry for 4 years (University of Sheffield), for which I was awarded First Class Honours. I am a passionate believer in applying science to lead us into a healthier, happier and more sustainable future.My current role involves working on highly interdisciplinary projects, covering microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, cell biology, bioinformatics and molecular biology. The knowledge I have gained in these areas ranges across human organoid culture from patient tissue, microbiome analysis, bacterial isolation from clinical samples, electrochemiluminescence immunoassays, transcriptomics, proteomics and novel organoid interaction assay design. Technical skills gained from my PhD include de novo genome sequencing, mammalian cell line culture, large scale bacterial cultivation and chemical purification methods. Such a diverse range of techniques demonstrates that I am a diligent and keen learner, unafraid of new intellectual challenges. I have a strong public speaking skillset. During my PhD, I have delivered numerous presentations and have been an invited speaker at multiple events, including the 6th International Conference on Mycetoma in Khartoum, Sudan. I was awarded the prize for best poster at the international 3rd Bacterial Cell Biology Conference. Early in my PhD, I also gained a place at the competitive and prestigious John Innes Centre Summer School in Applied Molecular Microbiology.Outside of work, I enjoying keeping my fitness up through regular gym workouts, cycling and bouldering and I'm currently learning Lithuanian.
