As a professional audio engineer I design, plan, and lead teams to install and operate amplified or broadcast audio and communications systems for live events. I design loudspeaker systems by creating a software model of the acoustic space and making a CAD drawing of the physical design of the system. I create signal flow documentation for our team to use during the installation and I work with equipment providers to specify gear and how it should be prepared for the event. I design and configure digital audio and control networks to meet the distribution needs of the event and ensure that it is implemented according to industry best practices. I tune loudspeaker systems using objective measurements to ensure that audience members hear the sound source accurately and at equal volume from anywhere within the coverage area. I also design and configure communication systems for use by the production team using analog, digital and IT based communication systems according to the needs of the event. I work with show producers to select and source music and other sounds, and to record and edit voiceovers. During shows I take direction to perform audio cues and mix live elements of a show. After the event I ensure that all of the equipment is packed up appropriately for return to the equipment vendor and that our crew works safely and efficiently. I also have an interest in music production, acoustic theory, vintage musical instruments, and recording equipment.
