As head English instructor and the sole foreign teacher at my school, I was responsible for the students'​ speaking and listening skills. There was little emphasis on reading and writing in my classes due not only to the demands of the schools, but to the fact that most Chinese students have far greater facility with reading and writing English. Students were assigned monthly tasks, for example, to create their own story, animal or country, depending on lesson themes. Class activities routinely included role-playing, trivia games, call-and-response exercises and worksheets, using the visual aid of smart boards and power points. I have attached a couple of examples below.

I was head instructor of the beginner and intermediate classes, some youth but mostly adults, which was held for two hours on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. I drafted lesson plans for each class according to the amount of material that was covered during prior classes, which ranged from the fundamentals of English grammar to practical listening and conversational exercises. We focused on reading and writing as well, but primarily the focus was speaking and listening. Students were given homework assignments, for example, fill-in vocabulary worksheets or finding a newspaper article pertaining to a particular subject. They were asked to bring their work and questions to every class so that we could discuss them.

During the month I lived in Cuzco, Peru with a host family, I worked intensively with two primary instructors Monday through Friday for approximately 4-5 hours per day in an after-school program, creating activities to engage our students, mostly 5-13 years old. We focused on developing their communicative and cognitive abilities. Another volunteer and I worked individually with the children on their homework (math, grammar, English) for an hour, then we would sit in groups while we discussed various topics in English and Spanish, which included literature, mathematics and daily routines. Three times a week I brought with me short stories and comic books, for which the students showed remarkable passion and interest. This was a tremendous learning experience which greatly enhanced my ability to learn and appreciate the Spanish language.
