Jonathan Vogt Work Experience Details
  • Aurecon
    Cfd Engineer
    Aurecon Mar 2022 - Present
    Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
  • Self-Employed
    Technical Director
    Self-Employed Feb 2018 - Oct 2021
    Brisbane, Australia
Utilising my experience in research, product development and program management, I established a technology research and development business through which I undertook early-stage applied research and concept development work in transport vehicle aerodynamics. The research progressed early design concepts to higher technology readiness levels through design performance evaluation, development and high-level economic analysis in order to inform prospects for commercialisation.
  • Damen Shipyards Singapore
    Research Engineer
Damen Shipyards Singapore Jan 2015 - Jan 2018
    Singapore / The Netherlands
Undertook applied and fundamental CFD research on a variety of marine vessels in support of Damen’s expansive market presence. Also undertook design evaluation and improvement. During my time at Damen:• I established the methodology to undertake accurate, cost effective CFD simulations, generalised the methodology to be applicable across Damen’s extensive range of vessels and contributed to the automation of large portions of the workflow so that it could be reliably undertaken by non-specialists. My work resulted in significant improvements in simulation quality, consistency, turnaround time and also reduced design risk by reliably identifying and mitigating problems early in the design phase.• I contributed to several design development and troubleshooting projects. These projects were either conducted to understand the flow field and optimise the performance of the vessel, or to identify the root cause of an observed performance deficiency and to offer a design solution. These projects utilised the fruits of the workflow development in order to obtain accurate results quickly.• I planned and executed a project to develop the methodologies needed to accurately reproduce the drag and heeling moment experienced on a ship model in a wind tunnel, in order to replace the regulatory requirement of wind tunnel tests with much more informative, cheaper and faster CFD simulations. This work will enable quicker design development for slender vessels (which are susceptible to side-winds) and enable improved design outcomes due to the high detail provided by the simulation. I published this work in a conference paper (Vogt et al., 2017, see below).• I helped establish relationships with the university sector in Singapore by co-supervising and mentoring several final-year undergraduate research projects at the National University of Singapore. I also helped establish a relationship with the Australian Maritime College at the University of Tasmania.
  • Self-Employed
    Cfd Consulting Engineer
    Self-Employed Jan 2013 - Dec 2014
    Brisbane, Australia
I was a CFD Subject Matter Expert, providing specialist consulting advice on fluid flow modelling to the infrastructure industry. This included:• Building a variety of CFD models, such as for mechanical ventilation for carbon-monoxide and thermal human comfort analysis. • A variety of projects on large public venues, such as the Sydney International Convention, Exhibition and Entertainment Precinct.
  • Aecom Australia Pty Ltd
    Research Engineer
Aecom Australia Pty Ltd Feb 2011 - Nov 2012
    Sydney, Australia
Undertook CFD applied research and Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) work on consulting engineering projects. This work was typically conducted on tight budgets and involved design-proving, problem-solving and optimisation. This included:• Simulating mechanically-driven and naturally-convected fluid flows and heat transfer, carbon monoxide and other particulate concentrations, in internal and external environments, modelling heat sources within and external to buildings (including solar radiation and wind) and undertaking human comfort analyses. I developed novel and efficient methodologies to improve simulation accuracy and/or reduce turnaround time.• This work was predominantly undertaken on large buildings for design evaluation, regulatory compliance, problem-solving and optimisation. These include Star City in Sydney, Sydney Cricket Ground, Newcastle Court House and data centres.• My work ensured that design solutions performed well, were demonstrably compliant with regulations and minimised the capital and ongoing costs of any required mechanical plant.
  • Unsw
    Post-Doctoral Research Associate
    Unsw May 2010 - Jan 2011
    Sydney, Australia
I undertook CFD research into the fluid behaviour of blood in occluded arteries. Involved in this work was the generation of meshes, verification and validation of numerical models, execution and analysis of simulations and writing research reports for later publication.
  • Unsw
    Cfd Researcher
    Unsw Jan 2008 - Dec 2008
    Sydney, Australia
Identified potential cross-disciplinary research opportunities around the application of fluid-structure interaction numerical modelling. The strengths and capabilities of the methodology were assessed and the research possibilities with other Schools within the university were assessed.
  • Unsw
    Engineering Tutor And Mentor
    Unsw Jan 2006 - Dec 2008
    Sydney, Australia
Involved class tutoring and marking for a wide variety of Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Aviation Management undergraduate courses.
