Taking care of a house and 2 small children was an amazing experience that allowed me to develop my communication and social skills. There I learned to multitask and to work under pressure.

Coimbra

I was asked by a colleague to help out in drawing the reconstitution of a Roman Circus, based in its ruins. I jumped at this opportunity as I was in to develop my creativity and research abilities. The ruins were no more than a few rocks in the ground, only giving us a vague idea of the size and program distribution of the Circus, letting lots of space for imagination. After some research on well preserved circus of the same size, after reading descriptions from archeologists about constructions details and shapes, and after following clues from nearby museums, we finalized a design that for its academic value, received a compliment from the archeologist responsible for the circus.

During my collaboration with a local atelier of architecture, I had the opportunity to do field measure of some old builds. Although this is a normal activity for architects, this experience actually improved my triangulation skills, field work and attention to details. Old buildings, especially those with more than a one hundred years, aren’t orthogonal or straight, making the work of design their blueprints very hard mainly when it has to be done by hand.

I have done a lot of 3D Models and Renders from conceptual ideas, actual buildings and architectural propositions. The most challenging one was of a big heath care complex for people with mental diseases. This involved field measure, blue print design, 3D modeling, heavy data management and rendering settings. During this experience, besides improving modeling and rendering skills, I have learned to work with proxy files and VRay settings management for better rendering time.

Definition and design of interior spaces as well as furniture is an exciting challenge. When asked to redesign a master bedroom this was my proposal: straight lines and space saving.

While the Exploratório - Centro Ciência Viva de Coimbra (science center for children) was being built, I was invited to do a timeline mural of the most famous characters in the history of Human knowledge and their field of working. This was a great opportunity to develop my senses of proportion, space and color. An interesting challenge was to deal with a client couldn’t express his needs and expectations, demanding a great psychology effort and little space for creativity. I learn a lesson that I think is really important in architecture: the ability to understand the client mind beyond his words.

I joined a group of architecture students to help a local atelier to develop the concept and initial drawings of two different projects: a house for rural tourism and the improvement of a local market. This was one of my most memorable experiences. The architect responsible let us talk to clients and gave us the responsibility to reach a consensus. We had to find the balance between our ideas and the client demands, we met the town mayor and we even got a raise in the budget for the market. Although the house is still to complete, the improvement of the market was finalized and is now fully working.
