Joe joined Lubrizol in 1985 to manage the company’s litigation matters; he was named general counsel of the corporation in 1991, and elected a corporate officer in 1992. He was responsible for the management of the legal affairs and health of Lubrizol and its wholly owned subsidiaries and affiliates around the world. During his tenure, Lubrizol was a publicly traded Fortune 500 company, prior to its acquisition by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway in 2011. He was a member of the executive committee of the company’s senior management for many years, and was the principal legal advisor to the CEO and the board of directors on matters of corporate governance. The corporate secretarial function reported to him, and he was responsible for SEC compliance. He was also responsible for the management, understanding, and procurement of all property, casualty and D&O insurance for the corporation. His staff included 28 lawyers.
