About Joseph Irwin

Have you ever been part of turning on the light bulb for a student? You can absolutely see when a concept or process that had previously been incomprehensible is clearly understood. It is this moment that makes my job as a trainer so enjoyable. I have had the opportunity to be part of this process as a trainer and facilitator, as the manager of a training program, as the developer of the course materials and as quality assurance inspector. As a former hands-on maintenance technician myself, I understand how important it is to keep technical skills current and updated with the latest techniques and knowledge. I also understand the importance of starting our employees off right with a solid foundation of technical training before we turn them loose and ask them to troubleshoot problems, isolate faults and make repairs. What makes me an effective trainer is that I can not only understand these concepts, but I understand them myself and can serve as a mentor and advisor – in the classroom, in the field doing hands-on tasks and inspecting completed tasks. You will see in my experience detailed below, I am a United States Air Force veteran who, for 7+ years, taught aviation technicians. Once I wrapped up my military career in 2014, I was hired and spent the next 7 years teaching technicians and students – both US and internationally – technical skills in the semiconductor industry. I truly believe that my technical background helps me learn new systems, technology and concepts with ease. In fact, I surpassed expectations in my current employer by completing the Level I, II and Advanced technical trainer certifications 3 months ahead of schedule.I enjoy what I do, but now I have decided that I also want to enjoy where I live. I am in process of relocating to Chattanooga, TN and am available for new opportunities. I can be reached at joseph.irwin1@outlook.com to discuss any opportunities where you believe I can add value.

Joseph Irwin Work Experience Details
  • Asm
    Senior Technical Trainer
    Asm Mar 2014 - Present
    Phoenix, Arizona Area
Using a combination of classroom lecture, hands-on and field training, I educate our internal staff, our customers and our field support personnel in the technical concepts and software interface of the Plasma Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition platform. I teach an average of 250+ students each year through virtual, in-house and field training courses. I love to create an interactive classroom that engages all types of learners and enables both US and international students to achieve success. Highlights include:★ As the senior manager, I oversee the training program to include managing the class schedules, overseeing course flow and performance metrics analysis. When I arrived, the program was not nearly as in-depth and comprehensive. After enhancing the quality of the course and its material, we were able to provide students with a technical certification upon completion. This improvement enabled us to produce production-ready technicians after just an 8-week course instead of 6+ months of on-the-job training. ✔ I have overseen both curriculum review and update projects as well as complete course creation and overhaul projects. From stakeholder needs assessment, to clarifying learning objectives, gathering SMEs and producing content, I can manage the entire process. Along the way, we look for redundancies or outdated material to shorten the training timeframe while improving the quality and course comprehensiveness.➨ With the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to get creative in order to keep delivering training that kept our technicians’ skills fresh and knowledge current. Within 6 weeks, we videoed all maintenance actions and were able to continue delivering training materials to our technical personnel. ➹ Promoted to Senior Trainer in 2014 after starting as a Trainer. Asked to take on more of a leadership and mentor role.
  • United States Air Force
Training Program Manager / Instructor (Ncoic, Mission-Ready Airman Training Program)
United States Air Force Jan 2009 - Mar 2014
    Luke Air Force Base
As the training program manager, I oversaw a team of 21 instructors that delivered both initial and advanced skills training for 1,100 students each year. As the senior instructor, I oversaw the quality of education delivered by auding courses, providing constructive feedback and managing instructor certifications. Highlights include:★ Through effective course flow oversight and innovative schedule management methods, within the first few months we eliminated a 65% student training backlog. Additionally, I mediated any student issues and ensured the learning environment was as positive and successful as possible. ✔ As the course manager, in addition to training facilitation, I also oversaw all curriculum reviews and course creation projects. During a thorough review process, we identified and eliminated 40 hours of non-value-added (NVA) training that reduced training time 17% and increased student throughput 6% each year.
  • United States Air Force
    Quality Assurance Inspector
United States Air Force Jun 2007 - Jan 2010
Quality assurance inspectors often get a bad rap. However, my approach to QA was to serve as an extra set of eyes to ensure accuracy and safety while also acting as an on-site trainer, mentor and advisor to the technical personnel. I personally performed 2,500 annual inspections, of varying scope, on the work performed by 350 maintenance technicians. Highlights include:★ QA is a very analytical role. It is important to review performance metrics and statistical data to see the trends, recognized the deficiencies and recommend improvement measures. This applied to safety incidents, QA fails and mishaps to mitigate future issues. In addition, I was part of the team that set policy and established best practices that were used organization-wide. ✔ This analysis of the root causes of failures helped us identify the most common errors and maintenance faults so that we could create and facilitate training that was dedicated to addressing and correcting these issues. These specialized training programs reduced major and minor QA findings by 45% and increased QA pass rates by 22%.
  • United States Air Force
Maintenance Team Leader / Technician / Dedicated Crew Chief
United States Air Force Jun 2002 - Jun 2007
    Luke Air Force Base
Planned, organized and directed up to 40+ technicians in 10 different mx specialties that performed all scheduled and unscheduled aircraft maintenance tasks on F-16 aircraft valued at $27M+. Prioritized tasks and managed daily workflow schedule to achieve flying schedule effectiveness above USAF standards. ★ To keep technicians' skills current, I organized technical training that ensured they met sufficient skill levels and maintained knowledge to perform quality maintenance and repairs. In addition, I directed OSHA safety programs, trained team in hazardous materials compliance, investigated root cause of incidents and introduced corrective measures or policies.
