While at Iowa State University and the National Animal Disease Center, I have been heavily involved in emerging, infectious bacterial disease research. The goal of my research is to clone, express, and characterize carbohydrate active enzymes that are putative virulence factors and involved in the pathogenesis of Leptospira. Leptospira is a spirochete that causes the bacterial disease, Leptospirosis, which affects humans and animals. Without treatment, this disease can cause liver and kidney failure, meningitis, and even death. By utilizing animal models, I am able to gain insight of host (human and animal) immune responses to infection as well as host-microbe interaction and test the activity of the enzymes by various analytical and immunological techniques. Characterizing the enzymes related to the pathogenesis of Leptospira will provide knowledge that is currently unknown, resulting in possible new and innovative approaches to the prevention of Leptospirosis.
