Justin received his B.A. in Psychology at California State University, Los Angeles where he was a mentee and a research / writing assistant to Dr. Herb Goldberg. He received his M.A. in Pastoral Counseling through Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. He is currently preparing to pursue a Doctorate in Community Care and Counseling with a focus on Traumatology, followed by Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).Justin has worked on the front lines of the mental health field since 2006, serving both adults and children diagnosed with mental disorders and often having co-occurring legal, behavioral, social, or substance abuse issues. He has worked in areas as diverse as wilderness therapy for at-risk youth, residential treatment for substance and sexual addictions, community mental health case management, and inpatient psychiatric hospitals. As of 2013, Justin had counseled over 1,000 individuals.Justin's greatest area of specialization is the field of crisis and suicide intervention / prevention. He served on a Mobile Crisis Team in Western North Carolina for 3 and 1/2 years, providing face-to-face crisis interventions and dispatching for an eight county area. He also volunteered for one year before going on staff with a statewide suicide hotline, helping to recruit, train, and manage a large team of volunteers and interns. Most recently he served on the Suicide Prevention Program team for the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities to develop, implement, and oversee multiple statewide suicide prevention projects.Justin has been described as professional, organized, detail-oriented, a fast learner, deeply empathetic, and a skilled communicator. He is an out-of-the-box thinker with a bias for action and an obsession with efficiency. He has a long history of vocational and extra-vocational leadership experience, and seeks to improve every organization that he is a part of.Research interests include: the role of culture, philosophy, and religion in suicide; attachment theory; Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs); personality theories; human needs; and neuroplasticity. Justin is a certified Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) trainer, a Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) trainer, and a provisional Psychological Autopsy Investigator. He is also an academically and commercially published author.
