• The Hind’s Lab focuses on nuclear receptors which are ligand-activated transcription factors. More specifically, my emphasis was how bile pigments are correlated to metabolic disorders.
• The goal was to extract and quantify bile pigments within adipose tissues and stool samples. Additionally, the purpose was to identify the role of one specific group of bile pigments, namely urobilinoids.
• Designed a sequence of experiments using knowledge from biochemistry and molecular biology to achieve the research goals.
• Quantified stock solutions of bile pigments using specialized techniques, specifically liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS).
• In vitro drug treatment of hepatocytes in order to analyze gene expression after variable parameters. Techniques included cell culture, mRNA extraction, and PCR (RT-PCR) amplification.
• Presented the thesis that explained theory, design, biochemical experiments, and data to peers and professors.
