About Justin Brunner
Technology should never come with an owner’s manual. We use apps and programs on a daily basis, and these tools are meant to solve our problems. Unfortunately, they can cause more headaches to use than they cure. As a software engineer, my passion is to design positive experiences through intuitive technology tailored to users’ needs. I’ve had the opportunity to improve user experiences on several occasions from rebuilding a poorly designed website to automating a 9- to 11-step process into 2- to 3-steps. I love hearing customers say “Wow! That is so much better”. With every project I take on, I ask myself what solutions will make for a great user experience.
Listed skills include Java, C++, Php, Node.Js, and 11 others.

I am one of two code owners over the DLP Configuration UI. It is my responsibility to add and maintain new UI features to the product using React, Typescript, and Styled Components to create a uniform experience on all UI we manage. My team makes use of Material UI version 5 to help reduce code duplication and re-enforce reusable components where ever possible. This includes adding theme options for a seamless developer experience when implementing components in light vs dark mode (with the ability to add other themes down the road). I have also implemented react hooks following the state reducer pattern for properly managing UI state between all of our components.
Software Engineer I
I spent my time working on the Data Loss Prevention team working in Scala. My responsibilities included building and maintaining micro services/APIs and libraries used by various teams within the company. These responsibilities included: - implementing new features frequently used by customers- unit and integration testing- Improving scalability and optimization of code- regular planning meetings- cross-team collaboration (especially coordinating with teams around the world to discuss product/code requirements)- Generating Grafana charts and alerts to prevent system failures- On-call responsibilities every several weeks (for a week at a time) - Grafana charts monitoring - Searching Kibana logs for debugging customer issues and tracking down where breaking changes were introduced - Monitoring Jenkins Automation Tests - Responding to Email Alerts of potential system failures - Messaging and updating responsible teams for breaking changes and/or notifying the product team of existing issues in production - Increasing and decreasing micro service instances and capacity when necessary to handle large lag (usually only when automated scaling wasn't working properly)I was also a core contributor to the creation of at least two new micro services on our team. I was also the primary code owner for both micro services for over half a year before switching teams. It was also my responsibility to train other team members about these services when I transitioned teams.
Software Engineer I
My primary role as an engineer consisted of implementing Angular and Scala A/B tests to observe user behavior with the purpose of (a) helping customers become successful, and (b) driving revenue. With these A/B tests, we observed key metrics in user behavior that lead to increased use of the product. My efforts led to positive user-behavior and an increase of more than $400,000 in revenue. Additionally, I was tasked with writing Selenium, Angular, and Scala automated tests to maintain the quality and integrity of the code base.
Business Applications Software Engineer Intern
I worked on developing software solutions for Proofpoint's internal control system. My primary priority was automating part of the product deployment process. This is projected to save the Provisioning team 70 hours or more each quarter. Nearly half of that time will be saved during end-of-quarter months, when the Provisioning team is busiest. I achieved this goal by automatically handling a process that previously required visiting an external website. I developed a module allowing this functionality to be easily applied anywhere within Proofpoint’s internal system.
Computer Programmer
I co-researched and improved the existing ETL process for a database used widely at BYU. The process that previously existed ran from midnight to noon each day. Tables were completely truncated and then reloaded while the ETL process ran, resulting in dead SQL reports for a short time. We restructured SQL queries to cut down cumulative load times of all tables by more than 10 hours and finished the entire process by 7:30 AM each morning. I researched, tested, and implemented an upsert technique to completely eliminate the down time of more than 100 tables. This resulted in data being available while the ETL process ran. In addition, I built and maintained a Tableau reports website, using both the Tableau JavaScript and Rest APIs, to host SQL queries as readable graphs and charts to users throughout the various departments at BYU.
Software Engineer Intern
My responsibilities included interacting with APIs to add and improve web features and fix bugs on the client and admin web applications. I aided in internationalizing the web UI based on user language settings. Using Highcharts, I built a water saving analysis chart to show users how much water they were saving each month. I also added a controller location tracking feature with Google Maps to help organizations distinguish between unique controllers and locations.
Computing Specialist
I redesigned the Academic Reporting website my team utilized to receive SQL report requests and communicate with more than 600 users on a regular basis. I set up a notification system that informed FERPA administrators to approve or deny new requests. I built the website to upload real-time information and added useful features that aided users while providing information. As a result of my work on the new reporting tool, my supervisor nominated me for "Student Employee of the Year", and I received two awards for productivity, proactivity, effectiveness, and accuracy. I developed training instructions and exercises to assist employees in basic web development, and I provided over 70 SQL reports to the various colleges and departments throughout BYU.
