I cofounded Smith.ai. We help your business operate more efficiently by qualifying your leads and triaging incoming phone & chat communication. We've been human + AI since long before AI was cool. Prior to Smith.ai, I did some ok stuff. I was Mint.com's first "UX" hire, designed and PMed the legendary Mint for iPhone, then led UX (User Experience) and Mobile for Mint.com through its acquisition by Intuit. Before that I worked as a designer for Apple's Apple.com and Pro Apps teams from 2003-2007. I was also at Google, but it’s not worth talking about. I also had the misfortune of spending a few months as Theranos' first Design Director in 2007-2008 but you can read all about that, including my resignation letter, in John Carreyrou's "Bad Blood."

Design LeadGoogle 2014 - 2015Mountain View, Ca, UsAndroid Auto. Spent 40% of my time arguing with the worst PM i ever worked with, 20% managing & coaching amazing designers, and 40% on the inefficient overhead of simply working at google. It's wild to see ideas we talked about in 2015 finally coming out in 2020. But they happened. -
Ux LeadGoogle May 2013 - 2014Mountain View, Ca, UsMerchant Payments & Billing (incl. Google Wallet, Instant Buy, and the systems that power Adwords billing). Our team led what is now Google Pay, but at the time they really, honest to goodness, called it "Pay By Face." -
Lead DesignerUpthere Dec 2011 - Mar 2013Upthere was a cloud storage startup (founded by engineering legend Bertrand Serlet) that had some groundbreaking ideas in file storage systems for the mobile age, but then decided to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on Quartz Composer prototypes of software nobody wanted to use to put "files in the sky." My responsibilities included design, management, marketing, contributing to product vision, trying to explain to executives that there were things called "Dropbox" and "Facebook" that already solved the problems they believed existed, staring at the floor in disbelief, and eventually interviewing with Google for a new job.

Director, User Experience & Game DesignSmule Jan 2011 - Aug 2011Salt Lake City, Utah, Us• Made things easier for users and verified this through analytics. • Storyboarded and architected information for upcoming game(s) • Watched a lot of Arnold Schwarzenegger movies and frequently lost at Starcraft.• Learned that Ge Wang is a genius and amazing person. -
Product Manager, MobileMint.Com Dec 2008 - Jan 2011Mountain View, California, Us• Led creation, product specification, design, customer research, and production of Mint's iPhone and Android applications, and future directions in tablet-based apps. • Co-managed partner relationships with Mint's business development team, including putting Mint in every Apple retail store iPhone demo.• Routinely walked out of meetings at Intuit because they were useless.• Took a ton of professional development courses at Intuit because they were world-class and changed my life forever. Spiral dynamics, anyone? Next level stuff. -
User Experience & Design Group LeadMint.Com May 2008 - Jan 2011Mountain View, California, UsI led user experience and design for our industry-leading personal finance application, managing a team of incredibly talented visual interface and interaction designers. I spent my day in tasks ranging from high-level, long-term strategic design planning to low-level prototyping, photoshop work, and HTML/CSS coding. I designed products and features that don't need manuals, that don't need help text, and that help people achieve things in life, not use software because we tell them to. When we fell short, I studied why customers find things difficult, and how we could make life easier for them. The CEO of Mint has endorsed me as "the most customer-centric person in the organization." I dedicated my attention to shaping the future of personal finance management, planning, and goal-setting towards a simple, painless workflow that helps people take control of their financial lives, get out of debt, make better decisions with their money, and trust Mint to help them get there. -

Not currently doing this, so please don't reach out unless we already know each-other.

Corporate Spy (Also Contract Graphic Designer)Savills 2002 - 2002London, GbFired for industrial espionage, which remains one of the finest accomplishments in my career and provides endless entertainment in ice-breaker situations. Security guards, interrogation, the works. Amazing day I was laughing about then and laugh about now.
