Currently the founder of horizontl, a tech social enterprise building non-extractive, community-serving tech to benefit full-service sex workers, who are not only among the most vulnerable, exploited segments of the workforce, but also at the fore of suffering the consequences of current approaches to technology and their unaccountable data collection, use, and governance.horizontl combines privacy-protecting full-stack online identity innovation with the delivery of essential, protective digital services to consensual workers in service of our mission to increase workplace safety, improve financial security and normalize protections for consensual full-service sex workers to reduce opportunities for abuse, exploitation and trafficking.horizontl emerged from a convergence of my experiences, most notably helping launch and scale venture capital-backed digital tech companies and working on an anti-human trafficking project. From that perspective, I closely followed the forces that led to FOSTA/SESTA, the single exception to Section 230 (foundational legislation that enabled the internet as we know it) of the Communications Decency Act in the US. It is now considered failed policy when it comes to preventing trafficking and protecting victims: the prosecution of traffickers, the key metric of success, has remained stubbornly low, and the number of trafficked victims globally continues to rise. But it has made sex workers the canaries in the tech coalmine. FOSTA/SESTA led the rollback of many of the proven harm-reducing interventions of early digital innovation for consensual sex workers (an estimated 90-95% of the 40M sex workers globally, a majority of whom are poor women, often from marginalized, vulnerable groups), revealed how existing tech (by business, governance & design models) is/can be weaponized against “undesirable” communities and individuals to exclude them from essential digital and financial participation, and introduced new digitally-facilitated harms for both consensual workers and coerced victims around the world.I now think a lot about how responsible, accountable approaches to technology, business, and policy can converge to protect the rights and interests of underrepresented individuals and communities, normalize user participation in design and governance, and retain and reinvest value in communities by acting as reliable, community-accountable digital infrastructure.
