As a pharmacy technician, the often nine-hour work shifts have tested my customer service skills, perseverance, and mental stamina. I accurately fill prescriptions, work with complex computer systems, and tend to customers on the phone and in person. Problem-solving is an integral part of my role. Occasionally, scripts are on-hold awaiting prior authorization which has given me a better understanding of insurance policies and the expeditious communication that is requested of physicians. By working in this avenue of healthcare, I appreciate the interconnectedness of patient management.

During my sophomore year, Dr. Julie Anderson, the director of the biology department and head of the Health Career Center (HCC) hired me as a desk attendant. In addition to my daily office tasks, I represented the HCC on two discussion panels for prospective students and their families. Initially, I was intimidated to work under such a prestigious professor. However, after three years, Dr. Anderson inspired me both as my employer and professor. She challenged me academically, held me accountable, and reassured me of my potential as a physician. This work-study job built my confidence and communication skills. I now welcome challenging authorities because that is how I grow.

I apprenticed for an introductory biology lab. I prepared notes under one of my favorite professors, graded quizzes and exams, and assisted the students during work-time. At first, I was shy interacting with my peers, but as I formed relationships with them I felt more comfortable. Not every student understood processes the same way, so I incorporated different learning styles into my explanations. I felt accomplished when students had an “aha” moment. By the end of the semester, I also became a mentor for a few of the freshmen; I believe there is always value to be gained and given beyond textbook information.

After about a year of medical scribing, Dr. Williams asked me to babysit his four children (ages two, five, seven, and ten). I was honored that Dr. Williams trusted me to care for his family, but I was hesitant because I hadn’t babysat in seven years. Nonetheless, after watching his kids when needed, I committed to nannying for eight days while he and his wife were on vacation. My patience was tested and I gained an appreciation for parenthood. In times of frustration, I had no choice but to calm myself down and persevere. Despite feeling unqualified, I accepted the challenge, stepped out of my comfort zone, and stayed true to my commitment.

I charted patient’s medical records for MDs, DOs, and PAs in two emergency departments. I shadowed any approved procedures: laceration repairs, wound washings, slit-lamp exams, etc. I inched closer as doctors examined X-rays and EKGs, eager for an explanation. Things that I studied in my anatomy and physiology classes were happening real time. I became familiar with lab results, medical jargon, and the importance of consultations. The exposure to a wide-variety of cases piqued my interest in medicine. I was just as excited to learn about procedures and testing methods after two years of scribing as I was on my first day. I was excited to get concrete exposure to patient-care and work alongside healthcare professionals as a medical scribe in an emergency department. However, I was taken aback by the learning curve; this was no longer a computer simulation. On my first day, I was timid in the fast-paced environment, unsure of myself, and afraid to ask for clarification. Yet, I applied what I learned from my volleyball growth-mindset training to this job. I showed up the following shift with an open mind, took criticism with gratitude, and affirmed my role’s importance. Within two years, I was comfortable and confident enough in myself to ask doctors for clarification. This experience challenged my personal development; I proved that I can overcome being uncomfortable. This experience also challenged my perception of patient-care. Before becoming a medical scribe, I thought patient-care was solely based on doctor-patient interactions. I learned that problem solving, communicating with nurses and other doctors, and empathizing with the patient’s family members are crucial factors to quality care. This exposure to a medical atmosphere has opened my eyes to the importance of a growth-mindset and to appreciate every detail that goes into providing excellent patient-care.

My most recent serving job was at a golf course in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In addition to serving large events, I drove the beverage golf cart, waitressed, and tended to the bar. Amidst the chaos of the popular Friday night fish fry, the staff relied on each other to manage the crowds. We delegated tasks, ran each other’s food, and kept up polishing silverware. It was easy to get lost and frustrated in the hustle, but communicating with other staff members was imperative. I learned to ask for help when I struggled and leaned on my team for support.

Dooley’s Pub offered me my first waitressing job. I did not know how to properly greet people or take orders. However, by working four shifts a week I quickly got the hang of things. After five months, I was training new employees. After a year, I was promoted to bartender. In this position, customer communication was key as many people came to the bar just to vent or share their stories. Talking to people became second nature, but more importantly I learned to listen.

I began banquet serving when I was sixteen-years-old at a Thornberry Creek Golf Course. My general duties included general cleaning, serving, helping in the kitchen, and setting-up golf outings, banquets, and weddings. Many hands and hours went into perfecting the look of the ballroom and preparing dinner. In order for an event to run smoothly, everyone had to be on the same page. Much like a basketball game, there was a game plan. Each “player” was assigned to serve a certain section. My favorite was the head table at a wedding. It was everyone’s responsibility to help out a struggling section if needed. After a successful night, we took a deep breath and celebrated together. Not before long, like a great team, we began preparing for the next event.
