I am working as a research assistant at Research Institute for Disabled Consumers, where I support inclusive research that aims to make services and products more inclusive and accessible. I am also continuing my role as a trustee at Heart of England Mencap, focusing on the advocacy and engagement of the people we support in our organisation.I came across this passion for a career path through my internship and trusteeship at Heart of England Mencap as I learned about the barriers people face in accessing health care. After hearing first hand from people with learning disabilities and staff the challenges, this led me to decide in my second year my dissertation topic: health inequalities faced by people with learning disabilities. Conducting interviews and focus groups with customers at Heart of England Mencap was eye-opening. I felt privileged to be able to facilitate this research whilst producing tools to dismantle barriers and empower individuals through accessible results and information for staff and doctors on how to enable care. Other opportunities individuals brainstormed were to have education sessions to understand their disability more and techniques to overcome challenges.
