Kathleen Lyon Email and Phone Number
I graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 2010 with a major in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering. Ever since graduation, I've been working just outside of Seattle at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a Nuclear Test Engineer aboard US Naval Nuclear Aircraft Carriers where I direct testing and operations of the nuclear reactor plants.I am incredibly motivated and hard-working. I consider myself an efficient-perfectionist, which is not a real term, but means I believe I have found an excellent balance between creating a near perfect end product while still doing so in an efficient and timely manner. I can learn and pick up on new things very quickly. I'm always looking to improve myself, to improve the processes, and to assist or help others improve around me. Group success is just as important as individual success.Outside of work, I still enjoy playing sports. I played soccer, softball, and ski raced in college, but now I mainly just stick to soccer and skiing. I grew up playing sports competitively, and I think some of that translated over into school and work. Not the competition aspect necessarily, but the drive to always give it your best, never stop working to improve, and the team attitude. My current job has required a lot of intensive training and testing to become qualified as a Nuclear Test Engineer. It's given me a great deal of practical experience working alongside the navy sailors on the aircraft carrier nuclear reactor plants as well as technical knowledge, personal skills working with others, presentation skills, mentoring abilities, and quick problem-solving capabilities.

Nuclear Shift Test Engineering SupervisorPuget Sound Naval Shipyard Jan 2016 - PresentGreater Seattle AreaIn addition to the description provided below for a Nuclear Shift Test Engineer, I have also been performing as a Nuclear Shift Test Engineer Supervisor. This consists of supervising and mentoring the two test engineers (one per each nuclear reactor on the naval air craft carrier), coordinating with other organizations to ensure support is provided as needed, ensuring testing, maintenance, and operations are being accomplished in a timely and efficient manner, and providing oversight and guidance to handle problems as they arise. Additionally, for the last several months, I have been the one in charge of coming up with the weekly plan for all the testing and operations. This requires understanding the technical requirements and sequences very well, planning the order of the evolutions, coordinating with the support organizations (ship's force as well as shipyard mechanics) to ensure operations can be performed on each day as planned successfully, and creating the technical documents that provide the direction and guidance in performance of our tests and operations. This also includes presenting the plans to the organizations and mentoring the two shift test engineers to ensure that they understand the sequence and the procedures. -
Nuclear Shift Test EngineerPuget Sound Naval Shipyard Aug 2010 - PresentGreater Seattle AreaI direct and coordinate maintenance and testing of the reactor plant systems on US Nuclear Naval Aircraft Carriers. I work alongside Naval Propulsion Plant Watch Officers to direct ship's force mechanics in performance of plant operations, test procedures, and establishing safe conditions for the performance of maintenance by ship's force and by civilian shipyard workers. I am in charge of overall reactor plant safety and operation.Beginning upon the initial arrival of the aircraft carriers, we direct the procedures to cool down the reactor and steam plants to maintenance temperatures and then setup conditions for maintenance to be safely performed. The complex part is planning and coordinating all the maintenance so that portions of the systems are still operable to always be able to remove decay heat from the reactor core which includes being able to add or remove water from the reactor coolant, maintain chemical compositions of the coolant and steam generators, and maintain operability of the systems in the event of a emergency. We design temporary equipment to be installed to support all the different combinations of plant conditions and maintenance items required. We determine the test requirements following the performance of those maintenance items, and direct the performance of those tests. Afterwards, we direct the procedures to heatup the reactor and steam plants to their normal operating temperatures and pressures, direct the testing to be performed at these plant conditions, and direct the startup of the nuclear reactor and light off of the steam plant equipment. We also train the ship on our tests and procedures, give daily briefings, analyze chemical trends of the coolant, mentor new employees, and gain a great deal of practical experience by being so highly involved with the sailor during all the testing and plant operations.
