At CGBI, I support the implementation and evaluation of a Duke Endowment-funded program that use quality improvement methodologies to expand access to evidence-based maternity care practices across North and South Carolina. I also support a W.K. Kellogg grant to develop lactation consultant training programs at historically black colleges and universities to increase representation of people of color in professional lactation services.

Recruited subjects and collected data for Dr. Alison Stuebe’s R01,“Mood, Mother and Infant”; provided research support for policy work advocating for Medicaid reimbursement of International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) in North Carolina; reviewed the literature to update evidence for the Ten Steps to Breastfeeding-Friendly Healthcare; managed communication and administrative issues for two national collaboratives funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation: National Collaborative for Advancing the Ten Steps (NCATS) and National Collaborative for Advancing Breastfeeding in Childcare (NCABC)

Collected qualitative data over three years in Bolivia to assess sustainability of Maternal and Child Health, Agriculture, and Water and Sanitation projects under USAID Title II Food Aid Program. I designed study instruments and conducted Spanish-language focus groups and interviews. I led the analysis of qualitative data using Nvivo8 and prepared reports on guidelines on exit strategies and program sustainability for USAID Food for Peace.

Provided bilingual nutrition and breastfeeding counseling to an underserved population in a maternal and child health-focused medical clinic. In this role, I planned, organized, and facilitated nutrition-related events, such as farmers market tours, cooking demonstrations, and breastfeeding support groups with La Leche League. I also participated in community health fairs and coordinating with local social service providers.

I worked independently in a rural Spanish and Quechua-speaking municipality to identify and implement community-led projects to improve local health and sanitation. I trained 16 female high school seniors to be community leaders in project development; curriculum included practicum weeks for students to replicate projects and apply skills. I wrote grants that received full funding to form a Municipal Office of Basic Sanitation, providing educational and organizational training to promote sustainability of local projects. Finally, I collaborated with local public health office and international NGO to form Municipal Inter-Institutional Hygiene Committee; executed first annual inter-institutional town health fair.
