As a former corporate recruiter and college career counselor, I have the unique experience of bringing three different perspectives to the job search process. Yes, I know the math is off. The reason it’s three, is because I’ve ALSO been the applicant. I’ve been on all sides of the proverbial fence, triangular as it may be.All this to say:1) I've been the recruiter, inundated with resumes on my desk, scratching my head in confusion, unable to make sense of how somehow so "qualified" failed to piece together a coherently formatted resume. Or, the other times when I’d wonder how resumes even made it to my desk because their skill set didn’t match the job I was hoping to fill in the least. I also remember the joy, though, in finding the diamond in the rough - that one solid, well-crafted resume that told the story of the candidate who fit my needs perfectly.2) When I left the corporate world to pursue a position as a college career counselor, I started to understand those confusing resumes better. While most of the students and alumni took advantage of the exceptional services of this particular campus career center, this isn’t the rule. During our initial meetings, my role was to explain the resume's why, what, how, when, and where. Resumes are, after all, often your first shot at selling your personal brand to a prospective employer. Understanding that resumes (or online profiles) are what lead to an interview, I impressed upon those students the importance of a solid, well-crafted resume if they hoped to land the job.3) Lastly, and I was reminded of this when I came across a cover letter recently that I’d submitted for my literal dream job (which I landed, by the way) is that I’ve also been the applicant. I know what it’s like to feel stumped and overwhelmed, sitting in front of a blank screen, wondering where to even start. I remember scouring through job descriptions and company websites trying to discern how I could articulate my experiences in a way that “worked” while trying to figure out how to create a document that was clean and professional but stood out from the others. I was aiming for a resume that was not only well-written but well-crafted. It is these three perspectives that lay the foundation for The Well-Crafted Resume. I believe in the strength of a well-crafted resume, and how positively it can shape your job search, and ultimately lead to overall career satisfaction.
