Vmware Administrator
Current
Run UCSC's IT department virtual hosting environment. My client base are the System Administrators that manage the virtual OS's on my hypervisors and by extension the application administrators and services running on those systems. The virtual workload includes UCSC-wide and departmental mission critical applications as well as development and "sandbox" type testing environments. The initial duties of this position was focused heavily on the technical nuts and bolts (build-out and standardization of preexisting environment). With increased efficiency through monitoring, scripting and performance trending, I'm doing more high-level work:- Watching industry as well as internal university trends and seeing how my service might fit into the future of "cloud computing" @ UCSC. - Compliance auditing of the full virtual stack - Assist other departments with their virtualization efforts- As far as my reach allows, look into marketing my hosting service into untapped markets. - Keep ITIL service documentation up to date (SLAs, OLAs, MOUs) as well as internal technical documentation for my co-workers. - Assist System and Application Administrators in finding performance bottlenecks on their services. - Consult on new or updated service architectures to see if a virtual architecture could be the best fit. - Worked to change the billing style of VMs so that we can right-size VM workloads to maximize the performance of all systems, not just departments with larger budgets.
