Program Coordinator
Bismarck, North Dakota Area
Humanities North Dakota is primarily funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). These funds are dispersed to communities and organizations across the state of North Dakota to provide quality programming that addresses issues and topics regarding literature, poetry, ethics, law, history, civics, philosophy, and more.HND's main event is the GameChanger ideas festival. A new theme is selected each year that reflects an issue in the community and across the nation. I've worked with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists (Sonia Nazario, Eric Schlosser, Seymour Hersh, Elizabeth Fenn); criminal justice experts (Piper Kerman of Orange is the New Black), Tom Gash, J. Piper Ferreira), healthcare reform advocates (Andrew Solomon, Dhruv Khullar, Ashton Applewhite, Caitlin Doughty, Kate Bowler) and those challenging the concept of the American Dream (Aparna Nancherla, Casey Gerald, Nate Boyer, Kate Bischoff). The ideas festival also included satellite events such as GameChanger101 communiversity classes. I was the liaison between local community groups and scholars and helped design the marketing plans, establish relationships with venues and partners, to develop informational and entertaining events.I also coordinated the Think&Drink program statewide. I collaborated with community organizers, local bars, and scholars to come together for public discussions focused on difficult topics (Prayers vs. Politics; Justice in Harry Potter; Russia: Friend or Foe?).I was also in charge of HND's Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts, as well as sending out electronic newsletters, organizing survey feedback, attending community events such as cultural competency training, meeting with potential program partners and donors, writing press releases, creating posters and postcards and verbiage for advertisements, and appearing on local news stations for promotion.Once I had to teach Ben Franklin how to use an electric tea kettle.
