About Kayla Ramirez
I am currently pursuing a double major in Chemistry with a pre-health emphasis and Biomedical Sciences with a minor in Psychology. I have been investigating the transmission and prevalence of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, a colonizing opportunistic pathogen found in both healthcare and community settings. While hospital-acquired infections in recent years have been significantly reduced, community acquired infections of Staphylococcus aureus are rising – meaning it is important for us to understand the colonization characteristics and patterns in communities and what factors are involved in transmission. I am currently working on DNA extractions of both nasal and oral samples that were run side by side and tested positive for S. aureus by PCR methods. We will further complete whole genome sequencing of these samples in order for us to better understand the transmission, carriage, and prevalence rate of this pathogen. At PMI, I have been given countless opportunities for working with human pathogens and clinical samples. The research I have done so far has furthered my passion and curiosity for science, and has motivated me to pursue a career in the medical field – where I can further contribute to the management and prevention of human diseases.

Recipient of the Clara M. Lovett Humanities in Action Fund to enhance the moral culture and climate through the instrumentation and revamping of the ethics committee. I am working alongside a team of two other students under the lead bioethicist at Northern Arizona Health (NAH), Dr. James Joiner, to integrate real-life application of ethics in healthcare by evaluating and creating educational materials to benefit the community in a general and healthcare setting.
