I've built my career in education, increasingly focused on interrogating choices that influence who might face barriers in a learning experience or interaction. I now lead 2U's accessibility initiative, reframing differences as learning opportunities aligned with our core mission: to unlock potential for more learners everywhere—and improve the experience for all. I'm honored to give voice to perspectives and lived experiences that are often overlooked.I'm committed to the long game, building shared understanding to help other teams across the company recognize and resolve mismatches between the products and services we deliver and the people who use them. By moving from responsive, all-hands-on-deck triage to a strategic commitment to proactive work throughout the product planning and development process, we've been able to distribute responsibility, clarify purpose, reduce cost, and extend the benefits of increased usability and flexibility to all. Before joining 2U in 2012 I spent twenty years in education, starting as a classroom instructor and professional development leader before taking the reins as Project Director for an afterschool intervention in the School District of Philadelphia serving over 40,000 students annually. A later role as Assistant Director of Content and Instructional Design at a division of McGraw-Hill led to games-based learning as the Director of Educational Resources at DimesionU. I faced the challenge of integrating standards-based curriculum content with the engaging game mechanics of an immersive multiplayer video game for an audience split between experienced teachers accustomed to dog-eared redlines and students who don't want anything beyond credentials and a virtual jet pack.
