I joined the Institute for Globally Distributed Open Research and Education (IGDORE) as their affiliated Researcher-In-Training and have pursued my research in Linguistics under their tutelage and support. I also share and endorse their advocacy for Open Science and Access to all scholarship and am keen to promote scholarly practices for making academic research openly accessible for all. Since 2022, I have been made a full Researcher on a par with all my fellow members at IGDORE.

I took over event management at the Ronin Institute on a temporary basis and my chief responsibility lied in the organisation of our monthly Lightning Talks presented by fellow Research Scholars at Ronin. This required compiling event and participant details on Google Sheets, co-ordinating the event with everyone involved, publicising the event details on social media, disseminating the same details to all members of the Ronin Institute and subscribers to our newsletter, and holding the event online (Zoom or Microsoft Teams) which occasionally required chairing the session and Q&A.

I was originally a co-lead of Communication at the Ronin Institute and in November 2021 I was promoted to sole lead which has allowed me to conduct internal communication within our community of Research Scholars and outreach with external members. I am also a regular contributor and participant of our Ronin Scholarship Online Library powered by Zotero where I am the main collector of publications and media references to Ronin Scholars. Furthermore, I produce occasional newsletters outlining upcoming events (see my responsibilities as Event Manager above) by using MailChimp, which sends e-newsletters to all our members and subscribers. I was invited by senior members of the Ronin Institute to take on the role of Community Journalist which involved co-administration of the institute’s publicity channel (Twitter) as well as internal communications within the community of Ronin Research Scholars. I initially joined as a signatory of the petition calling Stanford University to revoke their decision to eliminate the only full-time position of Cantonese teaching. As our campaign grew and our goal developed into promoting Cantonese education globally, I became involved in various aspects of Save Cantonese. I have translated numerous public notices and announcements from English to Cantonese and Mandarin and vice versa, served as a consultant on Chinese, specifically Cantonese, (socio)linguistics, and published an op-ed on Asia Times Online about the importance and significance of Cantonese education in the West which can be found here: https://asiatimes.com/2021/04/importance-of-teaching-cantonese-at-us-universities/ .
