I did research, teaching, and administration at New Mexico State University since 1991. I am presently a Professor and Department Head Emeritus and Distinguished Achievement Professor of Communication Studies. Until July 1, 2019, I was the department head for the NMSU Department of Communication Studies. I am now officially (July 1, 2019) retired from NMSU. I am listed as Emeritus Professor. My energies are now directed into music and family. I am available for consulting for political campaigns and government strategic communication. I am a scholar in the areas of a) new media networking, b) political communication, c) ethnicity and communication, and d) communication and national security, I am most known for my work on a) new media networking, b) new media and strategic influence, and c) political campaign communication.My new book about digital democracy is now in print: https://www.routledge.com/Internet-and-Democracy-in-the-Network-Society/Dijk-Hacker/p/book/9780815363026I am presently involved with with national security research in the areas of intelligence fusion, threat detection in automated discourse analysis, and framing in new media. I worked with some fine people at NMSU to create a minor in the Department of Communication Studies called Communication and National Security. This minor deals with communication, intelligence, and strategic communication. I served for 8 years in the state military, recently leaving with the rank of major in the New Mexico State Guard (NMSG). The NMSG is one of three arms of the NM Department of Military Affairs. I was happy to help others start the J. Paul Taylor Academy (charter elementary school) in Las Cruces. My hobbies include music, racquetball, and Chinese Kenpo Karate. I am also heavily involved in family life at home with my wife Joann and son Fabien. We enjoy hiking, movies, church, visiting with friends, and walking with our dogs. I play guitar in my church band and also record original music.
This was my first position as a professor after earning my doctorate.
